Is Travis Hunter a generational talent? Cam Newton would say yes. A few weeks ago, rumors swirled about tension between the two football stars on grounds of Hunter’s NFL future. The former MVP questioned whether the Buffs star could sustain playing both ways at the pro level, which led to plenty of speculation making Hunter’s mother pitch in her views. But now, Newton is setting the record straight, and this time, it’s all love.
On February 8, Travis Hunter welcomed his “7-on-7 coach” on The Travis Hunter Show. The former Carolina Panthers QB gave a piece of his mind when the two-way phenom asked what advice he would give him if he were his agent. “First pick,” Newton said. “The GMs kind of tipped it off and was like I want a generational talent. Respectfully, it’s like outside of Shedeur and Cam, there’s your only quarterbacks that you kind of reach for but generational for you. It’s a different monster.”

This “generational” comment put an end to any alleged beef between the two. Last month, Cam Newton stirred the debate saying, “I do think he can play both. Do I think he can play 73 plays on defense and another 57 on offense in the NFL? No.” It was a harsh reality check but all with good intentions. The internet ran with it, assuming there was tension. But Hunter’s mother, Ferrante Edmonds, shut down the outside noise during her interview on BiggDoggChico.
Edmonds reflected on the strong bond between Cam Newton and her talented son. The first time they met was during a 7-on-7 football tournament in Atlanta where the NFL star invited Hunter to join his team. “And my son from that day, he made a decision. ‘Hey, I’m gonna go play with Cam,’” Edmonds recalled. “I was behind him with his decision that he made, and that turned out to be the best thing for him.” And there’s a reason Newton is backing Hunter as a “first pick.”

Travis Hunter — A generational talent
Let’s face it. Travis Hunter is one of a kind and his records speak for themselves. Appearing on both offense and defense, the Georgia native played 600+ snaps, an unrivaled accomplishment in modern college football. As a WR, he recorded 1,258 yards and 15 touchdowns in 96 catches. His 15 TDs broke Colorado football records while leading the Big 12. On defense, he locked in four interceptions, 36 tackles, and 11 pass breakups. He’s the Chuck Bednarik Award winner for a reason!
Travis Hunter made another jaw-dropping performance at the final regular season game against Oklahoma State. He became the first player since 1996 to record three receiving TDs and one interception. No wonder he won the most coveted CFB trophy. More records are on the way. He’s the eighth player in Big 12 history to win the Heisman, the first non-QB winner since 2020. Hunter is also the first player in the conference history to win First Team All-Big 12 honors both as a corner and a receiver.
