The prize for winning the Duke’s Mayo Bowl is a no-thank-you for many! This season saw Minnesota emerge victorious in their dominant 24-10 win over Virginia Tech on Friday. But this victory only meant that the Golden Gophers would have to maintain the Duke’s Mayo Bowl tradition alive. And unfortunately for HC P.J. Fleck, he had to indulge in that victor’s ritual for his team.
After winning the bowl title, a fan posted a video of the Minnesota HC on X on January 4 with the caption, “P.J. Fleck gets the mayo bath and they got him GOOD.” The video featured the HC bracing himself on a chair as he prepared to have a bucket of mayo poured over his head. Many fans entered the comments section to label this act as “disgusting.”

This is the reward for dominating Virginia Tech inside Bank of America. Minnesota left them in the dust by leading 7-0 in the first quarter before adding 21 straight points in the second quarter. They recorded 404 total yards in contrast to the Hokies’ 223 yards. Like it or not, P.J. Fleck had to stand up and face this act, something not everyone can do.
Cries of disgust were heard as the mayo dripped over him. Among the shocked spectators is one golden reaction of a Golden Gophers player. The camera caught his raw reaction who looked visibly flushed and disgusted with what he’s looking at. His face was twisted in disgust as he mouthed “oh my god!” The gooey HC then stood up, wiped the mayo off of his eyes, and gave a sticky hug to their mascot.
Fans express their disgust over the mayo tradition
It’s just uncomfortable to watch and fans who saw it feel the same way. One person expressed their disappointment in the video saying, “This is one of the worse videos I have ever seen in my entire life.” But perhaps, not as bad as watching your team lose?

Another person joked about the player’s reaction in the video. They commented, “The player at :07 is crying because he just remembered Fleck’s deadly egg allergy.” Still, the video brought more disgust than cheer.
Another person labeled this act as an extreme. They wrote, “Most disgusting s— imaginable.” Just the thought of being covered in mayo is unsettling!
Can you even imagine yourself in his situation? One person added, “Beyond absurd. Who would agree to a spectacle like this? Embarrassing.” We bet Fleck never wanted this in the first place but the bowl games are different!

This CFB fan in particular might have one of the strongest reactions. They wrote, “There ain’t no way in the f—— world I’m letting people do this to me idgaf.” But there’s not much of an option for Fleck, is there?
A lot may find this mayo spectacle disgusting. But it’s commendable on P.J. Fleck’s part for being quite a good sport in keeping the tradition alive.
