Is Miller Moss the true leader Lincoln Riley needed, overshadowing Caleb Williams' NFL ambitions?

He outplayed our quarterback.” Isn’t it an enormous compliment if an opposing team’s head coach says this to a player? USC’s Miller Moss received this praise after the playoff between the LSU Tigers and USC Trojans on Sunday. Miller’s performance in the season opener raised many eyebrows. It’s almost certain that Miller is stepping up to fill the gap left by former QB Caleb Williams, giving Lincoln Riley a chance to breathe in relief.

Miller Moss was chosen as USC’s starting quarterback in the college football 2024 season after previous QB Calleb Williams got drafted in the NFL. Moss played as William’s backup during the past two seasons. Many discussions have revolved around whether Miller Moss is a suitable replacement for Williams. After Trojan’s season opener win last Sunday, it can be claimed that Miller Moss is doing his job quite effortlessly. To solidify it, let’s look at USC insider Jack Smith‘s tweet, which he posted a few hours ago.

Jack Smith’s tweet is centered on Miller Moss’s performance compared to previous USC leaders and reads, “To contextualize Miller Moss’ numbers, here are the stats from each of Lincoln Riley’s QBs in their first two starts under him.” Smith further added, “Underlined numbers denote the leader. In more ways than one, Moss paces the pack, especially considering he faces the hardest competition.” In the next few lines, he reveals Miller’s Moss stats along with others.

Miller Moss’s stats compared to Caleb Williams

The very first QB Smith mentioned in his tweet is Baker Mayfield. Riley was his head coach at Oklahoma University. Mayfield’s score reads, “42/72, 575 yds, 6TD, 2INT, 2Rush TD.” Next in is quarterback Kyler Murray, who received guidance from Riley during his time at Oklahoma College. His score is “28/44, 515 yds, 5 TD, 1 INT, 2 rush TD.” The next quarterback after Murray is Jalen Hurts, who was at Oklahoma University when Riley coached him; his scores are, “34/41, 591 yds, 6 TD, 0 INT, 3 Rush TD. The next quarterback is Spencer Rattler, whose score is “44/58, 677 yds, 8TD, 3 INT.”

Following that, the last two quarterbacks in Smith’s comparative research are Caleb Williams and Miller Moss. Under the supervision of head coach Lincoln Riley, Caleb Williams secured 33/43, 473 yds, 6 TD, 1 INT, and 2 Rush TD.”Last but not least, we have Miller Moss, whose score sums up to “50/69, 750 yards, 7 TDs, and 1 INT.” As the highlighted score suggests, Miller Moss’ 50/69 pass score is higher than every other starting QB. The sum of his two years as quarterback, 750 yards, is also higher than the rest of the QBs. The season has just started and Moss has a lot of opportunities to prove himself.
