The Michigan Wolverines had a disappointing season in 2024. Head coach Sherrone Moore had problems with his QB room as he experimented with three quarterbacks. Then there were some problems in his O-line and defense as well. However, as the season started to end with last games remaining, it seemed Wolverines and Coach Moore had ultimately found their quarterback. This was Davis Warren who seemed to cemented his QB1 spot and looked to follow it in the 2025 season. Until a tragedy struck…
Warren suffered an injury to his ACL in the ReliaQuest Bowl game. This would see him getting sidelined for almost a year. The QB1 spot problems came again and Sherrone Moore sought answers everywhere. He ultimately got it, as he snatched away LSU’s Bryce Underwood in a $12 million NIL deal. This was a prospect who had a perfect 100 rating on 247 sports and looked quite promising. Sherrone Moore then again signed another QB.

Moore signed Mikey Keene, another quarterback from Fresno State, in a bid to be the QB1 on their roster. The move was quite well planned and looked optimistic since it was expected that Underwood would gradually transition into QB1 as he will play QB2 under Mikey Keene. Well, that’s where another prospect comes into the picture and sort of gets ignored in the whole quarterback talks.
That other player is Jadyn Davis who joined Michigan in the 2024 class as a near 5-star prospect. Darren Talks Ball’s March 11 YouTube video talks about how Jadyn Davis could even be the QB1 contender, let alone QB2. “If you think that Jadyn Davis can’t compete with a more experienced guy like Mikey Keene, you may be wrong. I know there’s a lot of hype around Mikey Keene. I know a lot of people like the fact that he’s experienced and that he looked good against Michigan at periods of time last season… He has all the experience in the world, has it between the ears can read college defenses, and might be exactly what this team wants a starting quarterback.”

Well, Mikey Keene sure looks like a good prospect since he has the stats to back him up as he achieved a 70.5% pass completion rate for 2,892 yards last year. However, the main concern here is the level of difference between the group of five conferences and the power conferences. This is something that has to be taken into consideration when talking about the quarterback since Keene will need to prove that he can compete at the highest level. Whereas Jadyn Davis, being a freshman last year, hasn’t played a single game yet, and QB1 still will look a bit of a stretch for him now. Now, where does it affect Bryce Underwood?
Bryce Underwood’s signing a gamble?
Well, Bryce Underwood is someone who will need to prove his mettle soon and fast. Signing him was something of a gamble that Sherrone Moore took. I mean spending away $12 million is not easy when you have got the House v. NCAAs settlement lined up. But, it will still keep other teams from swaying the player away. Sherrone Moore also wants Underwood to showcase his talent fast as he said in a recent statement.

What’s your perspective on:
Is Bryce Underwood worth the $12 million gamble, or should Michigan have stuck with Davis Warren?
Have an interesting take?
“You just want to make sure you have enough guys in the room who can push each other. A big thing when we recruited Bryce (he said) was ‘who’s going to push me, who’s going to make me better?’ All his life he’s been pushed to be made better, he doesn’t want to be given anything, It’s open competition. Nobody’s promised to start, but he’s gotta earn it.”
The starting job will ultimately go to Underwood or Jadyn Davis or Bryce Underwood is still an open question. But one thing is clear: Sherrone Moore wants the best from all of his quarterbacks, and this spring practice season, we will get to know wo has got what it takes to be the QB1 and the QB2.
