Is Boise State's playoff potential a sign of shifting power in college football?

The tenth week of college football has begun. But anarchy has reigned since the first week of the season. And it keeps doing so. This time, the unexpected CFB playoff entries for groups are more important than the win or loss. The entire CFB community is now worried about playoff contenders because, as you are aware, the 2024 season has a few games left. At that time, a CFB insider made a bold prediction.

When questioned about the 10, 11, and 12 CFB playoff teams on The Rich Eisen Show on October 31, CFB Insider Bruce Feldman made a daring prediction concerning the unexpected arrival of two non-Power 4 teams; “Definitely looking at Boise. They had a nice win on the road at UNLV. You know, Ashton Jeanty’s legit Heisman contender.”

I think we need to see what else comes out of the AAC. Notre Dame. I don’t think just because Notre Dame beat their arch rival as convincing. But, but they’re there,” he continued. It shows that Boise from MW and Notre Dame from FBS independent will qualify for the 12-team playoffs, surpassing the excitement around the Big 12 and ACC.

However, why is it surprising? Feldman believed earlier this week that four of the 12 teams in the playoffs would be from the SEC, four from the Big 10, and the other two would be the ACC and Big 12 winners. Additionally, the other two can be non-power four conference teams. However, the entire perception has suddenly shifted.

SEC programs like Georgia, Texas A&M, and the Texas Longhorns have demonstrated that they can survive one defeat. However, Big 10 teams like Penn State, Indiana, and Oregon remain undefeated, giving them a chance to qualify for the playoffs. “Yeah, those would be the four. Then you’re sitting there looking at, you know, that takes eight,” Bruce remarked. Following those predictions, he ensured that Notre Dame ranks in 10 and Boise is in 9.

But, ultimately, it might come down to the audience, and the committee will select teams with better viewership. As of right now, the question remains, then, as to which Big12 and ACC teams the CBS analyst prefers and why he believes, they will make the playoffs.

Have an interesting take?

The ACC teams appear to be highly hopeful, according to the CBS insider. However, which team did he suggest as a potential 12-team playoff contender? According to his statement, the list includes Clemson, Miami, Pitt, and SMU. “You know, Clemson is bounced back from that bad loss to Georgia. Miami keeps winning. Pitt keeps winning. Obviously Pitt. Yeah, that one left a mark. Devastating. Yeah, Pick six all over the place. Then you have like teams like you know, SMU that are hanging around a one loss team. I mean those are the teams that it’s like, okay,” he stated.

What about Big 12, then? Given that neither club has lost this season, Bruce believes that two Big 12 teams ought to be on the list. Who are they? Specifically, Iowa State (7-0) and BYU (8-0). “Right now, there’s two undefeated teams in. BYU and Iowa State. I, I don’t know. I mean, there’s going to be an interesting argument, whether a potentially 12 and 1. I don’t, you know, if, let’s say, both teams are undefeated, I don’t think that’ll happen in the Big 12. But if it does, you have a 12 and one second you know, runner-up,” said Bruce.

So, the standing of the ACC and Big 12 teams is in question. And there are still games to play in the season; anything could happen. Thus, after the tenth week of CFB, be patient and observe how the list changes.
