It’s almost hard to believe that only a few months ago, the Wolverines were marching through confetti and cheers to lift the national championship trophy and now, their past has caught up to them. The state of affairs is bad enough for the head coach to face suspension, which raises doubts over the credibility of the defending champions this season.
The Michigan Wolverines had an unbeaten 15-0 winning streak last year before eventually winning the national championship. However, their glory didn’t seem to faze the fans since they believed that the sign-stealing practices of the coaching staff were the sole reason behind their supremacy. Almost a year after the first time the conspiracy came to light, the NCAA is still persistent in its chase and has revealed more information on the main man of the operation, Connor Stalions.

The NCAA has twists and turns for Michigan, but especially for Connor Stalions. As per the notice, Stalions led the efforts to allegedly illegally scout and receive the signs of a minimum of 13 potential opponents on over 58 occasions from the years 2021 to 2023. The season is yet to start and the Wolverines look to be fighting a losing battle already.

Stalions submitted his resignation during the 2023 season when these scandals first came to light. Jim Harbaugh packed his bags and left for the NFL and even though he also faces allegations of Level 1 violations, he’s safe to coach the Chargers as long as he chooses not to come back to the NCAA until 2028. As for Sherrone Moore, the HC could also be facing a show-cause penalty and potential suspension for deleting the text messages with Stalions, which seems to be an allegation of Level 2 violation. Thus, the defending champions seem to be stuck in quicksand that keeps swallowing them more and more every single day with newer revelations on the 2023 controversy. With that being said, let’s take a closer look at the illicit activities of Connor Stalions that landed him in deep trouble now.

A bad mustache, tacky sunglasses, and a baseball cap were all it took for Stalions to sneak into the staff of Central Michigan on the sidelines and find loopholes within their squad. Additionally, NCAA investigations revealed that Stalions removed computer hard drives from the Michigan offices in 2023 and gave one of the players, a sheet of opponent play calls. Everything he did seems to be an imitation of a James Bond movie from the 90s but the consequences will land heavy on the team’s credibility this season.
Stalions worked as an analyst for the Wolverines for 3 seasons under Jim Harbaugh but ultimately received a paid suspension on October 20, 2023, a day after the NCAA began their investigation. Stalions resigned in November when the revelation came out that he was the ringleader of the entire cheating operation that took place right under the eyes of the entire nation. On 27th August, Netflix will reveal a documentary on the sign-stealing scandal with an exclusive interview of Stalions, which will hopefully clear the air on how it occurred and why he chose to throw his career away in such a stained manner.
