The 2024 college football season marked a significant shift with the 12-team CFP format. Ohio State emerged as the first-ever national championship title winner of the newly expanded setup after navigating through numerous turns and twists. But this is certainly not the end of the huge reshuffling spree. It’s highly likely to break down into more numbers, allowing more teams to see themself in the playoff bracket. The Big Ten and the SEC are reportedly inching closer to exercising their dominance on the College Football Playoff structure and taking it to a 14 or 16 archetype.

The idea has not been welcomed with open hands in the CFB mix, as fans and veterans mostly see it as a slow ruining of the equally competitive edge. However, for the Florida Gators and Billy Napier, it may turn out to be a hidden advantage.

Florida Gators 2025 might not look like before following the potential playoff expansion

Billy Napier capped off the 2024 season with a four-game winning streak, including prominent victories against LSU, Ole Miss, and the Gasparilla Bowl. Looking into 2025, they are simply in a get-up-and-go mood: it’s either a playoff or bust. With DJ Lagway’s pivotal year under center, there’s a sincere air of hope in that direction. The new college football expansion proposal came off as a brownie point to lean on.

In the most recent episode of Locked On Gators, Brandon Olsen spilled the potential impact on the Florida Gators, analyzing how this can be a booster in their dream playoff run. While he critiques the financial overpowering and the centralization of power in two conferences, as a Gator fan, he sees the best for the Gators.

Because of this expansion, Florida will have a significantly higher chance of making it right like you went to the 14 team or the 16 teams, and you didn’t change the bids; it was just each of the power four teams and the highest-ranked group of five teams, and then nine auto or nine at-large bids or whatever it may be. Florida’s chances of making it go up decently, right, because then all you have to do to make it is be top 14 or be top 16,” Olsen explained.

The journey to ensure a postseason berth won’t be any easy. Divulging the challenges and the opportunities for growth, the insider added, ”

But that’s not how it works here. The SEC getting four auto bids means that you just have to be one of the top four teams, right? And I will also say this: getting the four auto bids obviously significantly increases your chance of making it, but I’m torn on it. Like, if Florida makes the playoff, I won’t be upset.” However, it’s not the first time Olsen advocated for a smooth Gators ride through the playoff. Ahead of the 2024 kickoff, the veteran suggested that the top 12 formats and a comparative thought schedule would significantly help the Gators’ path.

So, adjust your hope, because the end we got is largely forgettable. ‘

‘I want to see Florida make it because they’re an elite team, not because the college football playoff keeps getting expanded, right? Like, I want to see Florida make it because they are one of the top teams in the country, not because they’re allowing more teams into the college football playoff,’‘ Olsen made his stance clear on the Gators’ gaining a probable edge. They are indeed a good team with a chunk of unexplored potential. Can Napier’s latest revamping move get the job done?

Napier makes a strategic hire on the defense

Florida Gators’ head coach Billy Napier has been constantly striving to reshape his coaching room for the 2025 season following the departure of Will Harris. The standout secondary coach’s shocking departure to be Miami’s safeties coach came off as a brutal wake-up call for Napier. Harris was instrumental in class recruitment and position coaching. He has developed eight NFL Draft picks at Washington. However, the Florida HC finally found an altered stroke, and it doesn’t look bad at all.

According to multiple reports, Florida will swoop Deron Wilson in as the team’s defensive back to fill Hariss’ shoes. Wilson, the former Georgia State hire, possesses a premium resume to flaunt at Gainesville, boasting eight years of coaching experience. He also served as a defensive backs coach for Arkansas during the 2023 and 2024 seasons.

Also, there has been a major plus in Wilson’s resume, and that is his familiarity with the school. He previously worked with the program back in 2022 as a quality control analyst working alongside Corey Raymond. It remains to be seen how Wilson and the rest of Florida’s weapons pan out in favor of another season.
