Florida Gators’ fans are enraged with Billy Napier. A 1-2 start after their Week 3 loss to Texas A&M. They want their head coach gone. It seems like it is too expensive to fire Napier. So, they’ll have to get used to having him around. However, Napier isn’t the only one having uncertainty about his future. There are problems galore in Florida, especially at the quarterback position. On one hand, you have the seasoned Graham Mertz, on the other hand, you have the young amateur DJ Lagway who is already a record-breaker.

Napier has not been shy about his intent to play both players. “We’re committed to playing both players.”, according to Napier. However, this two-QB system is beginning to draw many eyebrows in the college football circle. There are those fans who find the efficiency of having two different types of QBs who can put pressure on offenses.

Ever since Mertz went out with a concussion in the first game of the year, Lagway came off the bench to ball out. The freshman set the school record for passing yards by a freshman by completing 456 yards with 3 touchdowns. Everybody erupted to endorse Lagway as the starting quarterback.

But the Gators are off to a poor start, and no one knows whether they’re going to have one of the most challenging schedules in the nation, then this quarterback dilemma has become easily the most interesting narrative in Gainesville. The question? Can Billy Napier’s strategy really pay off, or will Gators lose their season instead?

Some of the issues that fans have taken time to comment on include the decision to have both Mertz and Lagway as quarterbacks. Appearing on the Goals for Life Sports Show, college football analyst Paul Catalina asked, “I’ve not heard one good thing about Florida all off-season… How many games has Mertz won? In Wisconsin and Florida, how many?”. Combining both breathtaking performances, Mertz has had his brilliant moments on the pitch but has not always made that impact, especially in crucial games. That is why more fans still hope that Lagway will be given more starting appearances.

On Lagway’s part, there are only good things that one can say about it. In the game against Texas A&M, Mertz completed 12 out of 15 passes for 195 yards. On the other hand, Lagway completed 6 out of 13 passes for 54 yards. Both had one TD each to their name. However, Lagway had two interceptions compared to Mertz’s one. The two-qb system didn’t work, as the offense never ended. However, Napier will continue with the system. But if the Gators continue losing their games, the pressure on Napier to alter his decision will increase. With a shaky record and an underwhelming start to this season, time is running out for Napier to prove his plan is the right one.
