Can DJ Lagway turn the tide for the Gators, or is Napier's leadership holding them back?

However frequently we talk about this, it never gets old. Billy Napier’s time as the Gators’ coach may rank among the worst in recent memory. The Gators are currently struggling to maintain their winning streak. One more loss! Yes, The Florida football team lost heartbreakingly to No. 9 Tennessee in overtime, 23-17. It was Billy Napier’s last chance at redemption against the Vols, but he again managed to screw that one up. As the head coach, Napier has been nothing but borderline incompetent, with strange starting quarterback decisions. Why strange? Right?

The Florida Gators shared a photo of their starting quarterbacks on October 16 along with the statement saying, “Here is what the QB situation looks like currently: QB1: Five-Star Freshman DJ Lagway QB2: RS Freshman Aidan Warner (Yale Transfer)“. Yes, Florida has a two-QB system with Graham Mertz and DJ Lagway. In order to keep opposing defenses off balance, the Gators rotate between the two quarterbacks, as per Billy Napier. For instance, Mertz played twice for every possession against Mississippi State compared to Lagway did. But after the third quarter in the game against Vols when Graham injured, Billy Napier found himself in a quarterbacking quandary.

QB Mertz’s left knee ACL tear has been confirmed, necessitating surgery and keeping him out of the game for the rest of the campaign. After declaring his injury and choosing to miss the season, there are only two freshmen left for Florida without Graham. Although the two-QB system allowed Lagway to gain experience without disrupting Mertz’s stability, Mertz’s sudden season-ending injury turned the table for Florida and created a QB crisis. However, Lagway is a talented guy, no doubt about it, and the hype is true. But can he get this ship back on course? They have to face Georgia and Texas next.

Following their 3-3 loss to the Vols the Gators’ future appears to be all smoke and mirrors. Moreover, the two-quarterback system of Gators made fans more frustrated, and a fan said, “Wouldn’t it be nice if we had a coach with a true killer instinct that would be up something like 42-14 at the end of the 3rd where the new second stringer could get valuable game snaps? But no, Mr. Scared Money gets a 14 point lead and sits on it.” In the end, the Vols won the game because of the head coach’s incompetency.

As per fans, Florida has talented players but Billy Napier’s acerbic demeanor become the main obstacle in the current scenario. So a fan exclaimed, “Doesn’t matter who plays QB, the Coach is terrible!” On the other hand, some of the fans showed faith in the starting QB DJ Lagway, saying, “We wanted DJ now he’s thrown in the fire when shit is about to get tough.. hopefully he shows us something 🐊🐊.

However, some fear for Lagway’s future because they saw Mertz’s loss as a devastating blow to the gut. Thus, a fan said, “QB room has shrunk by 1. I hope we can keep them healthy.” The Gators will now take on Kentucky on Saturday. It will be difficult for the Gators’ quarterback without Mertz. We’ll see that Billy Napier’s quarterbacking problem is resolved or his time in Florida is destined to end.
