When the North Carolina Tar Heels announced Patriots legend Bill Belichick as their head coach, nobody saw it coming. But soon all the attention was diverted to Chapel Hill. From the moment a little more than 200 people crammed into a room inside Kenan Memorial Stadium for the news conference confirming the blockbuster move, one thing was clear- Belichick was going to bring unprecedented attention to the program. The six-time Super Bowl-winning head coach’s arrival brought extensive media coverage to the program as seen during the Tar Heels’ spring practice. The heightened interest in UNC also opened doors to potential media ventures and soon HBO came calling with its “Hard Knocks” offseason series.
At the end of last month, it was reported that HBO’s upcoming “Hard Knocks” series would feature UNC. It was going to be the first time that “Hard Knocks” was going to collaborate with a college football program, further underlining Belichick’s impact. However, after weeks of talks over an agreement, the deal was called off. “NFL Films had discussions with Coach Belichick and UNC about appearing on ‘Hard Knocks’ this offseason but couldn’t reach an agreement,” an NFL Media spokesperson told CBS Sports on March 4. According to CBS Sports, issues over creative control led to the deal falling apart.
At first, it was believed that this might be centered around Belichick. Given his history of keeping things under control, it would not have been surprising that Belichick would want control over the program’s content. But there is a twist in the story. The Sports Gossip Show has brought out another tea behind the whole decision, which changes the picture somewhat.

Host Charlotte Wilder made a bold claim on her show, saying, “Remember how last week we said that we were pretty sure the reason UNC “Hard Knocks” was not happening was because the creative control issues were actually code for Jordan Hudson, who wanted to be more involved in some capacity? I heard from a very trusted source that this is the truth. I reached out to some people at UNC to try to confirm this but have not heard back. However, I don’t think we were too far off.”
She, however, did clarify that this was, “alleged news” and not confirmed. Even co-host Madeline Hill left fans in two minds, saying, “Well, I think that rumor may be true. Again, we don’t know, but it feels like maybe.”
For now, there’s no way to confirm whether Jordan Hudson had any involvement in a deal not being finalized between the two parties. But there is something to ponder over.
Belichick has been enjoying life in the limelight again, making a red carpet-appearance with his girlfriend and even appearing in a Dunkin’ Donuts Super Bowl commercial with her. According to popular TV host Pablo Torre, Hudson is more or less Belichick’s agent, making key decisions for him.
“[Hudson is] the person who you need to go through to book Bill Belichick for a Super Bowl commercial or for the other commitments he has as a multi-platform personality. She’s the gateway. So in this case, what I have been told reliably, is that Jordon happened to then use that power to be in the commercial as well,” Torre said on his “Pablo Torre Finds Out” podcast last month. Still, nothing can be said for sure at this point. Besides, there could be another reason for Belichick or UNC’s lack of interest.
Last year most people thought the Giants came off poorly in the first-ever offseason edition of “Hard Knocks.” The show that usually spotlights training camp and, more recently, runs in-season series shed light on Joe Schoen’s management of Saquon Barkley and his pursuit of a new quarterback, before ultimately sticking with Daniel Jones for 2024. This did not sit well with Giants fans, resulting in a lack of enthusiasm from NFL teams to participate in this year’s offseason version.
What’s your perspective on:
Did Bill Belichick dodge a bullet by avoiding Hard Knocks, or did UNC miss a golden opportunity?

Despite a deal not materializing with HBO, there is still interest from UNC for an all-access series with another media group, but it might not be with HBO.

Hudson has been closely involved with the program ever since Belichick signed up, even coming up with a late-night creative project— embossing the Chapel Hill logo on a sweatshirt. In January, she also shut down rumors about Belichick’s commitment to the program after it emerged that he had not signed a formal contract with the university.
Posting a candid photo of the couple on her IG, she noted, “Pictured: two people who are overtly committed to UNC Football.”
Meanwhile, Bill Belichick continues to transform North Carolina, a non-traditional football powerhouse. His name and history have been beneficial in showcasing the program to potential recruits and they have already made some big moves. But Belichick is not settling as he recently offered a scholarship to the son of an NFL legend.
Hard Knocks isn’t stopping Bill Belichick from making big moves
While “Hard Knocks” might not happen, Bill Belichick’s impactful strategic changes speak for themselves. And let’s not underestimate him. As Bill Belichick is already hard at work. If you don’t know, UNC is facing a -$1.2 million NIL deficit, but that shouldn’t deceive you because, under Belichick’s leadership, they are thriving. He is active in the transfer portal, bringing in 19 new players while losing 17. This results in a net gain, and the 2025 roster is showing promising talent.

The incoming class is headlined by four-star QB Bryce Baker and three-star LB Tyler Houser, demonstrating UNC’s ability to attract quality recruits. Since Bill Belichick took over, UNC’s performance has been on the rise. He is addressing the major issue of depth, and despite being 11th in the ACC and 51st nationally for 2025, they are not a team to be underestimated. Belichick is establishing a strong foundation, and what’s even more impressive is that he is gaining the trust of recruits who are still a year or two away from college.
And, shifting our focus to the future, let’s delve into 2026. Belichick has made an offer to the class of 2026 wide receiver Devin Fitzgerald. Fitzgerald is the son of future Pro Football Hall of Famer Larry Fitzgerald and plays for Brophy College Preparatory in Phoenix, Arizona.
Belichick’s 2026 recruiting class boasts three-star commits Marcellous Ryan, Justin Lewis, Zaid Lott, and Jaden Jefferson, propelling them to 8th in the ACC and 38th nationally. What’s more, UNC has just secured Skylar Robinson for the 2027 class. It’s uncertain whether Jordan Hudson is connected to the “Hard Knocks” controversy, but Bill Belichick will undoubtedly continue building his dynasty.
