Is the $850 million Ryan Field upgrade a game-changer or just an expensive distraction?

Older college football stadiums are like vintage pieces in a museum; they can be admired from afar, but they’re not practical for the modern-day football world. “They’re no different from driving a Model T right now. So if you’re going to build every 100 years, you have to get it right, and you have to get it right in a way that’s looking forward toward the world you’re moving into,” said Pat Ryan Jr. while talking about the new Ryan Field. Do you know the Ryan family has been the most prolific donor to the school?

The old Ryan Field was demolished earlier this year after standing there for over a century. Now, the school has started the new construction this week, which is scheduled to open in 2026. The $850 million project of the new Ryan Field stadium was unveiled on Monday and Fox College Football has shared the news on his X handle. “This new Ryan Field stadium design from Northwestern is INSANE. This $850 million project is the largest in CFB history.”

Now that we know, the old Ryan Field is under construction. That meant that when Ryan Day’s team came into the town to play Northwestern, the game was shifted to Wrigley field, home of the Chicago Cubs in the MLB. That didn’t matter for the Buckeyes as they dominated the home team and managed to win comfortably (31-7).

However, the fans criticised the decision to choose a baseball stadium for a football game. They have their reasons for it also. Some of them complained that the cameras are blocked by poles and make it difficult to catch every moment of the game. “Why do the Bucks have to play in a busted baseball park when Northwestern already has one of the nicest stadiums in the Big Ten?”

Moreover, the 12,000-capacity also didn’t sit well with the Buckeyes-faithful as a bigger stadium would have been able to hold a larger away crowd. To their credit, the fans were not wrong. The home team didn’t make most of its Big 10 clash against the mighty Buckeyes. For Ryan Day’s team, the only bad thing that happened was a potential injury to their star WR Jeremiah Smith. We await updates on that matter.
