Home/College Football

College football recruiting is a battlefield, and right now, Hugh Freeze might be low-key feeling like he just got ambushed. One minute, Auburn is sitting pretty, thinking they’ve got a chance at locking in a 5-star linebacker with 43 offers, and the next? BOOM. Here comes Deion Sanders with the type of swagger that makes recruits rethink their whole future.

On February 2nd, the No.1 LB of the 2026 class, Tyler Atkinson, took it to X after Deion Sanders made his move—a direct, high-energy Zoom call with Atkinson. And let’s just say the kid was feeling it: “🕒Good time with Coach Prime🕒 I appreciate the time & conversation with Coach Sanders today. #GoBuffs #AtkNup.” Deion Sanders has already made it crystal clear: he’s not just here to coach—he’s here to flip the script on college football recruiting. Deion Sanders pulled a lot of talents from the class of 2025. If you’re a top-tier recruit, you better believe he’s coming for you. And in Atkinson, he sees the next big thing for Boulder’s defense.

At 6-foot-3, 210 pounds, the Grayson High School product has speed, power, and football IQ that puts him in a different category. The Georgia native put up eye-popping numbers as a freshman: 112 tackles, 22 tackles for loss, 8 sacks, and 4 pass breakups. That’s not just production—that’s domination. He’s drawn comparisons to Colorado’s own Heisman Hunter, which is fitting since both hail from Georgia and rock Adidas on the field. And now, thanks to that call with Sanders, Boulder might just be in his future.

Now, let’s not get it twisted: Auburn is still very much in this fight like many others. Hugh Freeze has been all over Atkinson since July 2024, and the Tigers have looked like the early favorites. Atkinson even made a visit to The Plains last summer.

And let’s be real—Auburn and Hugh Freeze still believe they can land him. The SEC is still king when it comes to elite defensive talent, and Atkinson has offers from just about every powerhouse school: Georgia, Alabama, Ohio State, Florida State, USC—the list goes on. The real question is, can either one of them lock in on Tyler Atkinson?

Tyler Atkinson’s heated recruiting race

If you thought this race was already crazy, buckle up. This is about to turn into an all-out war for one of the most coveted recruits in the 2026 class. Atkinson and his family recently hosted Georgia defensive coordinator Glenn Schumann for an in-home visit.

“Coach Schu and I talk about everything,” Atkinson told reporters back in November. “They really want me to be there.” But Georgia isn’t alone. Ohio State and Tennessee have also pulled up for in-home visits. And Oregon’s Dan Lanning even ditched a weekend visit plan when Atkinson was under the weather—and instead flew all the way to Georgia just to meet with him in person. If that doesn’t scream ‘we want you,’ nothing does.

And let’s not forget about the helicopters. Yeah, you read that right. At least four different coaches have pulled up to Grayson High School via helicopter just to get some face time with Atkinson. That’s the level of demand we’re talking about here. Right now, Atkinson is getting more attention than a Kardashian at a Hollywood party. Coaches are lining up, and every visit, every call, and every move matters. He’s made it clear he’s dropping a Top 5 or Top 6 list soon. And once that happens, expect the intensity to go through the roof.

“When it comes to my final decision, I really want to make sure I get it right because I’m going to give that program my all just like I do at Grayson, and I want to know that the school I pick will give me their all, too.” Translation? NIL deals alone won’t win this race.

Relationships and development will be just as important. So, where does that leave Auburn and Hugh Freeze? In deep water. If Freeze wants to seal this deal, he’s got to out-recruit one of the best recruiters the game has ever seen. Even for Deion Sanders, it ain’t looking all pretty, cus Zoom call ain’t gonna cut against the chopper visit. Right now, the Bulldogs are favorites to land the 5-star. And that’s bad news for the rest of college football.
