Did the Illini's punter just outshine the entire Wolverines squad with that Oscar-worthy fake?

Boy, oh boy are the Illini kicking the Wolverines down. Standing on 21-7, no one in their wildest dreams would’ve probably thought that HC Bret Bielema would have a one-up over Sherrone Moore. A backup QB for the Illini is making better plays than any of the Wolverines QBs have done this entire season and that alone speaks a lot. But, the cream of the crop, the cherry on the cake from this game came from the Punter.

Andy Staples took to his X account to share what he had to say about the “fake punt” the Illini pulled off. “Give the Illinois punter the Oscar for that fake,” Staples mentioned. Here’s the absolutely bonkers part; the punt allowed Illinois to convert it into a fake touchdown drive and make it a 2-point conversion to push to 21 points on the board. The entire game was pure perfection from Punter Hugh Robertson and QB Luke Altmyer.

If you thought Billy Napier was having a bad season, then you have no idea what Moore is going through. With the entire NCAA allegation debacle hanging over his shoulder, Moore is now deep into the season with one of the best teams in CFB and has still managed to hit a 4-2 run (call it 4-3 if they lose against Illinois).

The last 5 years of Michigan football have been a wild ride. In 2020, the team was nearly horrible, but then Jim Harbaugh somehow managed to turn things around. Back in 2021 till 2023, with Harbaugh’s offensive mindset and JJ McCarthy in the lead, the team managed to win back the crown and became one of the best out there. But there was a catch; they cheated.

And now? Well, with a QB who is as good as soggy bread and Moore with his horrendous decision-making, the team is back again at square one. Moore and his quarterback room has to be one of the worst this season and there is literally no way to turn this around. At this point, the Bowl games are the only option, but god knows if they can even crack that. Now, switching things up for something positive; we gotta talk about how Illinois managed to mop the floor with the Wolverines.

Have an interesting take?

Bret Bielema and Co. clutching it

5-1 going to 6-1 after this. Bielema and his offense and defense have managed to do something which any unranked team out there only dreams of. Standing on 194 rush yards against the Michigan D-line, the entire Illini offense has been on point. It shouldn’t be a surprise. They managed to do the same against defensive giants; Nebraska and Matt Rhule.

But coming off of that 50-49 close call against Purdue, no one had thought that the result of this Wolverines game would end up being so dramatic. Credit where credit is due; Michigan has managed to halt the run from the 3rd and 4th quarters, but it ain’t gonna bring Moore the win he wants.
