Can Steve Sarkisian's $2.4 million gamble finally put Texas football back on the map?

Everyone in CFB is on a wild ride to guess the SEC winner. However, Texas Longhorns head coach Steve Sarkisian has marked himself safe from the frenzy. Instead, he has committed himself to that one task of bolstering his roster for the 2025 draft class. Last season, the program shelled out a whopping $2.4 million on recruitment. And guess what? This season, too, Sarkisian is acing the recruitment rodeo so well that it’s enough to leave his rivals in a pool of cold sweat.

Every day, it’s one achievement or another for the Longhorns HC. And August 25 had been no different as Texas landed the nation’s top-ranked safety, Jonah Williams, followed by the most potent SEC commit of 2025.

Last season had been a bed of roses for Sarkisian and Co. They had invested a hefty amount of $2.4 million in their recruitment drive, and it reaped significant results. The Longhorns became one of the nation’s most prominent schools as they snagged nine highly touted high schoolers backed by five-star athletes. And guess what? For the 2025 class, Sarkisian is moving forward with the same momentum. On Saturday, August 24, they landed the two-sport star from Galveston, Jonah Williams.

Even though the safety had more than 30 offers on his plate, the Sarkisian charm propelled him to go for the Longhorns. And it’s a big win for Texas. After all, the left-handed pitcher has a 94-mph fastball. Until now, Alabama Crimson Tide, Texas A&M, and Oklahoma had been enjoying the top positions on the list. However, as Sarkisian pulled out his ace, the Longhorns moved up six spots.

Analyst Ian Boyd’s take on Williams would further boost Sarkisian’s morale, “Williams could easily drop down to linebacker level and be effective there but you also want him on the back end with the potential to hang back. He has the range to shrink deeper passing windows or run the alley in run support.” However, the Longhorns HC is clever enough not to count only on Williams and instead hooked another big fish!

It has been a tough call for Sarkisian to bring in the 2025 offensive lineman Nick Brooks in the Texas ‘hood. The BIG 3 that ran behind the four-star Loganville (Ga.) Grayson’s offensive tackle were USC football, Texas, and Georgia. No wonder the 6-foot-8, 355-pound OT gave his words to the Longhorns. In an interview with 247Sports, Brooks cited the reason behind his choice, “I can see the people that I’m working with. The players, they’re calling me to check on me, even the QBs. Not many guys are talking to the QBs.”

Ever since 5-star OT Michael Fasusi went with Oklahoma moving past Texas, Sarkisian promised to gift the Longhorns an absolute phenom. It seems the HC has kept his word. The numbers say it all. According to the ESPN rankings, Brooks is the No. 17 offensive tackle and No. 122 player overall in the 2025 class.

Texas spent 13 years trying to return to the golden times of the Mack Brown era. Luckily, they are now headed by someone as talented as Steve Sarkisian. Sarkisian has been long known as a schematic wizard, making top prospects swarm around the Longhorns squad. Sarkisian’s ready to step up as the recruiting monarch!
