Paul Finebaum has never missed an opportunity to criticize Deion Sanders, taking jabs at Coach Prime whenever he can. During the SEC Media Days, Finebaum didn’t hold back, dismissing Sanders and his team as irrelevant to college football. He confidently declared, “They won’t make playoffs.” Given the Buffs’ rocky performance last season—ending with a six-game losing streak and a disappointing 4-8 record—it’s not hard to see where some of this skepticism comes from. Deion Sanders had promised a lot in 2023, and when things fell apart, the critics pounced. But this season, Sanders isn’t without his supporters, and one big name is throwing his weight behind Coach Prime.

On August 24th, Yahoo Sports shared a surprising endorsement from former head coach Nick Saban. During ESPN College GameDay, Saban praised Sanders, saying, “I’m all for Coach Prime. He’s doing a great job.” It’s a case of talent recognizing talent. While many mocked Sanders and his team, even as recently as August 24th, it’s undeniable that he’s made a significant impact at Colorado. When Sanders took over, the program was struggling, but he quickly transformed it, elevating its valuation to over $200 million.

Not only that, but Sanders also brought some serious talent with him, including his son Shedeur Sanders, now regarded as one of the top quarterbacks in college football, and Travis Hunter, arguably the best player in the game. Deion’s presence has undeniably raised the profile of Colorado and the Buffs, drawing attention and stirring up rivalries. As Outkick Hot Mic put it on July 20th, “Dan Lanning and others are circling that game on their schedule to beat the sh*t out of Coach Prime.” Why? Because no one else is doing it quite like Coach Prime.

Despite last year’s struggles, Deion Sanders hasn’t lost an ounce of confidence. Instead, he’s doubled down, learning from his mistakes and making bold changes to the team. He overhauled the entire offensive line and brought in experienced players and coaches from the NFL, including Pat Shurmur, Warren Sapp, and Adalius Thomas. With these strategic moves, the Buffs are shaping up to be strong contenders for a bowl game. As ESPN’s Jordan Reid noted, this season is pivotal—it’s make or break for the team. The performance of Shedeur Sanders, Shilo Sanders, and Travis Hunter will significantly impact their prospects for the 2025 NFL draft. This year, all eyes are on Coach Prime and his team as they aim for redemption and a shot at greatness.

What’s your perspective on:

Is Nick Saban's praise enough to restore faith in Deion Sanders' coaching abilities?

Have an interesting take?

Reid had mentioned in his scouting report for Shedeur Sanders that the kid is a solid playmaker with the talent of becoming the next big pick in the drafts. However, his inability to survive in his pockets and defend himself made him a mockery in 2023. If the same happens again, then teams would reevaluate drafting Shedeur as the first pick. While we all know that Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has his eyes on Shedeur, we still don’t know if it will come true or not.

On the other side, for Hunter, things are looking good. Daniel Jeremiah had mentioned in his scouting report that when it comes to WR, Hunter is unmatchable. His skills shine when he has the ball in his hands. However, defensively, he needs to improve. We all know that there is a high chance Hunter and Shilo Sanders could head to the Raiders. Deion and Raiders HC Antonio Pierce have a good connection and, with Hunter and Shilo being added to the team, would give Antonio the edge he is looking for. Still, for now, we can only wait and watch where this road leads Coach Prime and the Buffs.
