Is SMU the dark horse that could disrupt the college football playoff picture this season?

$20 million. That is how much is on the line for Ryan Day and Co. this season. And it looks like it won’t end up being a disaster after all. Ryan Day has spent a lot to build up this roster, and it has paid off with the 7-1 run. This clears up their calendar and gives them at least a 90% chance of cracking the playoffs. More so because Day and Co. managed to grab a win against undefeated Penn State at 20-13 last weekend. With Chip Kelly‘s master full-playing calling being added to the list, Ryan Day has managed to hit the 5-seed spot on the first CFP playoff bracket. However, there is one surprise candidate who can switch up the game fast.

Back on Instagram, Adam Breneman puts up his Week 10 CFB stock report. In the clip, Breneman puts forward his surprise team name. “SMU. Yes, SMU stock up. They’re creeping up in the ranks after dominating an undefeated pit,” Breneman mentioned. Okay, so we gotta talk about the Mustangs. These guys came out of nowhere. Started the season off with a blowout 59-7 win against HCU, the Mustangs have gone on to average at least 40 points in almost all of their games. Yes, the BYU game was a straight loss at 18-15, but after that, they did not lose any momentum.

They took to the turf against the Panthers and managed to end their undefeated run with 48-25 on the board. The best part about their games has to be their defensive line. These guys have managed to hold back opponents at around 22 points average in almost every single game.

And all the credit goes to DC Scott Symons. SMU has now managed to crack it to the 2nd spot on the ACC top list and is right behind the Hurricanes. They control their destiny with a defense that ranks in the top spot in their entire conference in terms of allowing rushing yards per game.

BUT. That does not mean that Day is going to fall behind any time soon. See, earlier in the clip, Breneman also puts up his stance regarding OSU. “The Buckeyes had a statement win against previously unbeaten Penn State,” Breneman noted. See, Day has cleared his path to become the next big thing. All they have to do now is grab 4 back-to-back wins, which shouldn’t be that hard. But someone who will have it rough is the Aggies.

The Aggies are falling behind

Have an interesting take?

“They will need a miracle to stay alive.” Not something you wanna hear about your team. The Aggies were on quite the high. After grabbing the massive win against LSU with 38-23 on the board, the Aggies had pretty much solidified themselves as the next big playoff contenders.

Even back on ESPN Kickoff, Heather Dinich also pointed out that the Aggies were in such a massive spot that they were stopping Notre Dame from hitting the playoff list. However, the South Carolina game cast an eclipse over all the plans Mike Elko had for the team.

Hitting a blowout loss with SC grabbing a 44-20 run over the Aggies, their chances of hitting the playoff list are quite bleak. More so because their 2 losses come from games where they were projected to be the better team. Breneman pointed out that the Aggies are on “stock down” right now and the “post-season hunt” will be quite rough for Elko.
