Travis Hunter is getting all the limelight so far, and rightly so! The two-way threat in Deion Sanders’ armory has proven the naysayers wrong by having highlight-worthy moments on defense and offense. Naturally, the conversations don’t stay limited to college football. Every college football dreams of that progression towards the big league- the NFL. Travis? Is he getting any attention from NFL teams? Should he? Just kidding!

Colorado’s now-offensive analyst and former NFL head coach Pat Shurmur had some insights on if any NFL team is eyeing the Florida-born Buffs star. Shurmur, a guy who’s seen it all, spoke about Hunter, in an interview. “Yeah, I think I’ve said to all 32 NFL teams, but he has some superpowers, and the most obvious one is his ball skills.” Now let me tell you this isn’t a phrase you get to hear regularly. This is not some random coach who tries to cheer up a player — Shurmur’s words have power.

But, of course, the Heisman is only but half of the picture. The real hype of Hunter’s journey to the draft is that all the 32 NFL teams are circling him like he is the cream of the crop this year. The skill set, coupled with the timing, is what has people turning their heads and noticing how Hunter has been Colorado’s go-to guy. There was that game against Baylor where he forced a fumble near the goal line in OT and let’s not forget the late heroics against North Dakota State. If you have not seen those plays, save yourself some time and go watch the tape.

Shurmur didn’t stop there, either. He added, “When you are playing corner, it’s very, very important that you affect the ball, and you see, you know, he gets interceptions right as a defensive player, but he knows where he’s supposed to be.” Talk about instincts, right? Travis Hunter doesn’t just depend on talents alone. His football IQ is off the charts.

That last point probably speaks more about Hunter and how he can flip from offense to defense on the field like no other. As Shurmur put it, “Anytime there’s a ball in the air near him, we got a really good chance he’s going to catch it, whether it’s been offensive or defensive.” You don’t find many guys who can thrive on both sides like that. The NFL appreciates that sort of thing.

Travis Hunter: the Heisman race

Now it’s not a question if Hunter will make it to the NFL it is more of a question of when will he get there. And when that time comes, he’ll be a name you won’t want to forget or look the other way when you hear it. In truth, the dude’s an instantaneous highlight and as Shurmur said it, “He’s one of the better ones you’ve seen.” One has to wonder how this kid is going to one day when all 32 NFL teams reach out to him, still a long time away.

So now let me entertain you with a Heisman contender discussion. That means Jalen Milroe of Alabama is the frontrunner for the moment, however, Travis Hunter is not that far off. All in all, Hunter is at +425, which isn’t a joke for a non-quarterback. The dude has played over 660 snaps, which is just crazy when you think of how much time he spends out there. In last week’s game, Hunter was back to making a case for him in every possible way that a player could: whether receiving a crucial touchdown pass or stripping the ball from an offensive player.

Hunter’s ability to read that field is not just lip service as well. He’s out here scoring points proving all the hype is true—561 yards receiving, 6 touchdowns, 16 tackles, and two interceptions. So let’s count that as more than just impressive; let’s call that insanity.

That’s something the NFL is paying attention to; for Hunter, the future seems bright. That NFL excitement around him is more than the potential – they are talking about him as a top-10 pick if he keeps this up. To some extent, that justifies how he has been playing all season long; he deserves to enjoy the fruits of his labor.
