Could Jalen Milroe be the next Lamar Jackson, or is the hype too much too soon?

This time at Alabama has been nothing short of impressive for Milroe. Embarking 6 feet and 2 inches tall and weighing 225 pounds, naturally destined to be a dual threat. Up to this point in the season, he has had 964 yards, 10 TDs, and one interception. His QBR? A solid 87.6. You can’t argue with those numbers! He has great arm mobility when lots of scrambling in and around the pocket is applied during his college plays, which means when it comes to the NFL, he is well equipped. A QB with a great running and passing game, and of course, there are comparisons! Who better than the 2023 league MVP, Lamar Jackson? The Baltimore Ravens star just showcased a Milroe-like performance against the Buffalo Bills this past Sunday. Amid all that comparison, Milroe is getting genuine interest from the pros.

There are rumors that New York Giants are looking to target Jalen Milroe in the draft. Yeah, you heard that right! Several NFL scouts also propose that the Giants will likely ‘get’ Milroe as their next quarterback after this current season. Why? Because this guy has some serious potential, and he’s got a killer connection with a familiar face in the Giants’ locker room: head coach Brian Daboll. It will not come as a surprise when Milroe and Daboll become the next duo in the next offense overhaul. “Match made in heaven.” Sounds like a game-changer, right?

But wait, it gets better. Should Jalen Milroe end up in New York, the match-up with wide receiver Malik Nabers could be something potent. The rookie has had 35 receptions for 386 yards and 3 touchdowns this season. Just imagine Milroe throwing those passes to Nabers—just think about the number of records that would be broken! That could quickly develop into one the most lethal combinations of quarterback-receiver duo in the league and make the Giants a formidable team.

Quite vividly, Daboll understands how to manage stars, particularly with designs that involve forming an efficient connection with dual-threat quarterbacks. His stint in Alabama as the office coordinator provided him with a chance to work with the kind of player as Milroe. One scout noted. “Daboll is a wizard with quarterbacks, and he gets the best out of them.”  If Milroe does wind up in New York, get ready for Daboll to use that Alabama connection to develop Milroe into one of the league’s elite.

It’s all about that synergy. It somewhat suits Daboll’s offense since Milroe can move with his feet and make the big plays. This could be enough to turn the Giants from a poor team to a good team worthy of a playoff spot. Indeed, as another scout said, “Milroe brings an energy and a talent that can revitalize a franchise.” Well managed, the Giants could be gazing at their quarterback of the future and part of the solution to their current mess.

Therefore, what does this portend for Milroe and the Giants going forward? Well, if they play it smart, they could redesign the whole image of the franchise. The Giants’ experiment with Daniel Jones hasn’t worked so far. They may be looking at a new quarterback for next season. Another good thing that may work for this equation?

Both Milroe and Daboll have worked for the GOAT of college football- Nick Saban. Milroe was Saban’s QB1 last year when the SEC winners fell to Michigan in the playoffs. In 2017, Daboll came to college football after spending 17 years in the NFL to work with Nick Saban as offensive coordinator for the Tide. While Daboll was only there in Alabama for only one season, he oversaw the growth of two QBs who went on to become premier QBs of their respective NFL teams- Jalen Hurts and Tua Tagovailoa. Moreover, in just one season, the Tide went to the 2018 national championship game. In a familiar sight for the Tide fans, they overpowered the Bulldogs to win the national championship.

That connection could prove vital for the rookie QB if he is acquired by the Giants. We regularly see how young QBs struggle to find their feet in the league. However, a healthy atmosphere and a supportive coach who knows how to develop QBs can pave the way.
