The Purdue Boilermakers are doing great in the current NCAA season, chiefly riding on the heroics of their star Zach Edey. Edey has been an indispensable player who has undone Purdue’s walk of shame.
But not far behind is another athlete, the Duke Blue Devils’ center Kyle Filipowski. Filipowski is currently being looked at as a competitor to Edey when it comes to national awards. A close look at their stats will give a clearer picture.

Filipowski averages a spectacular 18.4 points per match with 9.2 rebounds per game. He smoked a double-double in three games out of 10 with his season-best 28 points coming against the Hofstra Pride in the recent game. The Blue Devils’ center stood out with his performances, particularly during his contest against the Charlotte 49ers, when he selflessly guarded the defense and nabbed 13 rebounds while only scoring five points, becoming a one-man defensive wall for his team.
Additionally, Filipowski is also a decent shooter. He averages a good 51.5% field goal percentage along with a 32.4% three-pointer percentage. The 20-year-old has stunned all with his free throw percentage of 73.6%. These stats are a testament to his shooting skills, and he has proved his mettle to all. The best part about him is that Filipowski is a complete team man and is a full package for the Jon Scheyer-team.

If Filipowski can continue his exploits this season, he will be a serious contender for the National Player of the Year award.
How has Edey advanced?
On the other hand, Edey has been a delight to watch this season. He averages a whopping 22.9 points per game, much better than Filipowski. His rebounds average of 10.8 rebounds per contest are also commendable and better than his competitor. Edey has obtained a double-double in seven of the 10 games he has played, and he has been the go-to man for his team.

The 7-feet-4-inch baller’s exploits propelled his team to win the Maui Invitational and without him, the Boilermakers couldn’t even think of being challengers for the NCAA season 2023-24. His season best of 35 points indicates the central role he has played for his team since he has smashed the season high twice. He also outclasses Filipowski in the field goal percentage with 63% and a free throw percentage of 75.9%.
Where Filipowski is trailed by miles in his three-pointer skills, three-pointers aren’t Edey strongest suit. In fact this season he has 0 three-pointers. Edey thus isn’t as complete a player as Filipowski and the Boilermakers have thankfully modeled their game around the Toronto-born. Things would have been different for Edey if the team strategies hadn’t worked in his favor.
