Eight players were ejected after a furious altercation between Kentucky and Florida during an SEC women’s basketball tournament first-round matchup. Kentucky’s touchdown put them ahead of the Gators 22–14 with less than six minutes remaining in the second quarter.
Kentucky’s junior forward Petty recovered the ball and turned directly into Florida’s sophomore forward Tatyana Wyche, delivering the ball to her but shoving it up near her face before racing to the other side of the floor. A referee sounded his whistle, and an irate Wyche hurled the ball down the court in despair. It’s unclear if her intention was to strike Petty with the ball.
Wyche started moving faster in Petty’s direction and ultimately rushed after her, but before players and officials blocked her path, Wyche was only able to shove the Wildcat. Petty was escorted by an official from the situation in front of Kentucky’s bench. As Wyche’s coaches escorted her to her bench, the altercation persisted, and players were segregated from one another.
Hailey Van Lith’s tense altercation
After No. 5 ranked Louisville defeated No. 4 ranked Texas in the women’s NCAA Tournament held in Austin, Texas, there was a tense moment between two players. Sonya Morris, a player from the Longhorns, approached Hailey Van Lith, a Cardinals standout guard who led the team with 21 points, three rebounds, and three assists in their 73-51 victory.
Morris held onto Van Lith’s hand as they spoke, but Lith seemed unhappy with what she heard, although the camera did not capture what was being said. She brushed away Morris’s hand and proceeded down the line, but turned around to speak to her again. During the news conference after the game, Van Lith thought Morris was upset about the defeat and was questioned about it.
A wild battle between the Jacksonville Dolphins and Robert Morris
During the Urban-Bennett Memorial Classic, the men’s basketball game between Jacksonville and Robert Morris took a chaotic turn. A heated fight broke out during the second half, resulting in both teams’ benches being ejected from the game. Jacksonville held a slim 53-52 lead over the Robert Morris Colonials when they called a timeout with 6:21 remaining.
However, tensions escalated, leading players from both teams’ benches to spill onto the court in a brawl. As a result, the officials dismissed all players from both teams. TJ Wainwright and Marcus Niblack, along with head coaches Andy Toole and Jordan Mincy, were each given four technical fouls for their involvement in the altercation. Despite the chaos, Jacksonville managed to come out on top, winning the game 74-65. It is worth noting that no punches were thrown during the confrontation, but it did cause a 16-minute delay.
