Two college basketball players, Caitlin Clark of Iowa and Angel Reese of LSU, are favored to win the 2024 National Player of the Year award. Their respective teams are also the top picks to win the National Championship. This upcoming season is shaping up to be one of the most highly anticipated in the history of women’s college basketball. Angel Reese, who plays for a talented LSU team, is in a similar situation to Caitlin Clark. The Tigers are a well-rounded team with a dependable frontcourt and plenty of depth at the guard position.

However, Caitlin Clark, the returning senior and current National Player of the Year, is looking to repeat her success from last season. ESPN’s 2023–24 top 25 players rankings have ranked Caitlin Clark as the top player, leaving no room for her strong contender, Angel Reese, to take the top spot.

While Caitlin Clark received the top spot in the tier, ESPN moved Angel Reese up to the No. 11 seed. As a junior, she led the country in assists and 3-pointers, which were difficult for defenses to match. This season, several significant individual records, such as the NCAA Division I career scoring and 3-point records, might be attained.

But Angel Reese, despite her brief absence, has her own fair share of accolades. She became the program’s focal point in her first season in Baton Rouge, put up impressive stats, and—most importantly—led the Tigers to their first national title as the Final Four Most Outstanding Player.

Her ability to detect missed shots is unmatched by many players; during the previous season, she led the nation in offensive rebounds per game. Reese was selected for the SEC and Big Ten all-defensive teams, proving that she was worthy of all the praise she got in April.

Some surprise elements in the CBB ranking

The first top 25 doesn’t include any freshmen, as they haven’t had enough time to establish themselves. Injuries have also significantly impacted the ranking, with Stanford and UConn players fiercely vying for spots three and four. UConn’s point guard, Bueckers, has been out due to injuries for nearly two years.

However, her coach, Geno Auriemma, believes she is a better player today than she was when she won the national player of the year award as a freshman. At number four is Cameron Brink, a senior and member of Stanford’s national championship squad as a freshman.

She is equally formidable on offense and defense, ranking second in the country in blocked shots per game in the previous season. Unfortunately, Stanford’s 2022–23 campaign ended in disappointment as they were eliminated in the second round of the NCAA and Pac-12 Tournaments.
