The third-seeded Purdue Boilermakers won their season opener against the Samford Bulldogs with a blowout margin of 98-45. The night was one to remember as the winning team overcame their three-pointer woes and leaped towards a massive victory. Taking cognizance of the same, former University of Massachusetts Amherst head coach Matt McCall predicted the future of the Mackey Arena team that had all the fans sitting on the edge of their seats with anticipation.
McCall’s statements resonated with the Boilermakers fandom since the players gave their all in the contest against the Bulldogs.

McCall appeared on ‘The Field of 68’ podcast on Tuesday alongside John Martin and Rob Dauster. He discussed at length about Purdue’s spectacular performance during their season opener against the Samford Bulldogs. The trio also went on to discuss individual exploits that were a delight for the fans to watch.
“I agree with Rob. I think it was the most impressive performance of the night,” McCall said. “I think if Purdue doesn’t lose in the first round of the NBL tournament and I get it they did and that’s a big storyline and we all have to talk about it. I believe we have them as the number team in the country.”
The Purdue took a massive lead of 21-1 during the start of the Game since the Samford missed their first 10 shots. The Boilermakers showed improvement in their three-pointers as compared to last season when they found it difficult to shoot from outside the arc, especially during the second half of the tournament.
While the Purdue basketed four three-pointers in the first seven minutes displaying their improved capabilities this season, the Bulldogs could make a solitary field goal in the first eight minutes.
Three players that stood out for the West Lafayette team were the freshman Braden Smith, National Player of the Year Zach Edey, and their forward Cam Heidi. Smith scored 12 points in the game with seven assists and four rebounds, whereas Edey was instrumental in scoring 16 points with 11 rebounds in his 20 minutes thus stacking a double-double.
Heidi stood out with his athleticism and pocketed 13 points with two blocks. Looks like Edey’s return will be redemptive.
