Wake Forest registered an important ACC win as they toppled the Blue Devils on an exciting Saturday night. The No.8 Duke had no answers for the tenacious Demon Deacons who made full use of their home conditions. However, Duke’s 83-79 loss didn’t turn out to be the developing story of the night.

Wild scenes transpired on the court after the game that had adverse effects on Duke’s dynamic center–Kyle Filipowski.

After the official final buzzer handed Wake Forrest a big win over the Blue Devils, Filipowski was standing on the court coming to terms with the disappointing defeat. At this time, he didn’t realize that a wave of fans were storming his way in jubilation to celebrate the home team’s win. Following this, the Duke’s towering giant was mauled down by this stampede and suffered a potential knee injury. His teammates and head coach John Scheyer surrounded and helped him out of the court.

This is not the first time that a college basketball game has witnessed such madness. In the women’s basketball division, Iowa’s Caitlin Clark was at the receiving end of something similar in her game against Ohio State. But she was lucky not to go through any injury.

In his post-game media address, Scheyer commended Wake Forrest for their spirited effort. The epicenter of his press conference was the dangers that the issue of court-storming poses. Scheyer said, “I’m more concerned about the well-being of our guys. Flip (Kyle Filipowski) sprains his ankle. When are we going to ban court-storming? How many times does a player have to get into something where they get punched or pushed or they get taunted? It’s a dangerous thing and I don’t want that to take away from the game that we played.”

It will be interesting to see what penalties will be issued against the Demon Deacons. Undeniably, such rampant behavior by fans isn’t acceptable as they pose serious threats to the safety of these college athletes. Some serious measures are expected by the conference to make sure such incidents doesn’t repeat in the future.
