It is not unusual for basketball fans to witness a heated verbal exchange on the court. However, it is completely unanticipated when the altercation turns physical. Something similar transpired in a recent SEC game between the Alabama Crimson Tide and the Florida Gators.

The junior forward let the emotions get the better of him and committed a malicious act on the hardwood. As a result, he has been facing the required consequences for his actions.

An attempt to grab a loose ball became nasty on Wednesday night. Seemingly, Florida’s Alex Condon was at the receiving end of a vicious elbow in the back of his head by Alabama’s forward Mohamed Wague. The incident happened during the first half of the game when multiple players tried to get control of the ball following a failed beyond-the-arc attempt by Alabama’s No 15 Jarin Stevenson. Following this, Alabama tried to get an offensive rebound but as it turned out it was stripped away after what followed.

Consequently, Mohamed Wague has been suspended and will not take part in Alabama’s game against Kentucky. Evidently, the NCAA rule states, “a player be suspended for the next regular-season game if he commits an act of fighting.” Moreover, the act of fighting is defined as, “a confrontation involving one or more players, coaches or other team personnel wherein (but not limited to) a fist, hand, arm, foot, knee or leg is used to combatively strike the other individual.”

Meanwhile, the Crimson Tides were able to secure a 98-93 victory in overtime. However, the victory tasted sour for head coach Nate Oats who shared his input after the game.

What does Nate Oats have to say?

Oats seemed to have accepted Wague’s punishment by the Southeastern Conference without any further objections. He was quick to release an official statement soon after the game ended. Nate said, “We received the discipline for Mo from the SEC and agree with the suspension. After reviewing the film, the penalty is understandable and appropriate.” It will be interesting to see how Wague’s absence affects Alabama’s game on Saturday.

With this punishment, the SEC makes it crystal clear that there is no room for violence on the court. Hopefully, the fans will not get to witness such occurrences in the near future.
