Being a Hollywood veteran, Bill Murray is a familiar name to most people, though many might not be aware of his son’s success in college sports. At home, the Golden Globe winner and ‘Ghostbusters’ star is surrounded by his brood of six boys. Among them is Luke Murray, who, like his older brother Homer, made a name for himself outside of the entertainment industry.
Luke is currently working as an assistant coach for the men’s basketball team at the University of Connecticut. This means that, apart from the silver screen, Bill Murray also makes his appearance on the court to watch his son command a team of undefeated men.

Bill Murray and Margaret Kelly, his first wife, eloped to Las Vegas on Super Bowl weekend to get married. Married from 1981 to 1996, they had two sons, Homer and Luke. Although Murray’s acting skills and comedic genius left a lasting impression, he has always been a die-hard sports fanatic. His love of sports went beyond the big screen when Murray was seen with Michael Jordan in Space Jam. Additionally, not many know that despite his accomplishments in films, Bill never intended to work in Hollywood. Instead, a young Luke’s dream of becoming a basketball coach was sparked by Bill’s love of sports.
Born on April 1, 1985, Luke went on to graduate from Fairfield University in 2007. At 13, Luke’s parents were divorced, and he was mostly raised by his mother, but he continued to see Bill frequently. It was during this time that he became utterly engrossed in high school and collegiate basketball. During one of these conversations, Luke mentioned that he wanted to go to the elite ABCD Camp, which has a reputation for producing young athletes with exceptional basketball talents and has since climbed the college coaching ladder.
His first job was at Quinnipiac University as the director of basketball operations. Before Dan Hurley recruited him as a full-time assistant at Wagner in 2011, he served as an assistant coach at Post University and an assistant at Arizona. When Luke joined Dan Hurley’s staff in 2021, UConn had lost six straight seasons of tournament matches, and since then, the Huskies have had a great court record. The “French Dispatch” actor, like any good father, was often spotted supporting his children.
Back at the 2015 Emmy Awards, Murray ditched the ceremony to attend Luke’s Philadelphia wedding to Kara Cassidy. That evening, he won the category of outstanding supporting actor. Over the past few years, Bill has also established himself as a regular at UConn’s NCAA Tournament games. He attended UConn’s victory in last year’s national title in Houston and the Elite Eight in Las Vegas.

Bill also made headlines when Luke assisted the Huskies in winning the NCAA Men’s Championship game on April 3, 2023, where he was seen cheering from the stands as UConn won their fifth national championship. Later, he told the media, “I’m very proud of this boy, he’s a wonderful kid, and he’s worked very hard.” Interestingly, all of UConn’s players have stories of how they entered Murray’s office and discovered him absorbed in viewing basketball footage from across the globe.

Luke Murray has obviously inherited his father’s ability to distill observations into insightful observations. He routinely watches professional basketball played as far away as Spain and France, taking inspiration from the game. Luke then practices the same in Storrs, Connecticut. Because of UConn’s success and Murray’s crucial contribution to it, A-list guests are traveling with the Huskies in their March Madness convoy. Undoubtedly, Bill Murray will be in the stands as long as UConn is participating in the men’s NCAA tournament in 2024.

The actor was present to support his son, the assistant coach who devised the Huskies’ unstoppable offense and is largely responsible for the team’s endless run of NCAA tournament wins. In addition, the Hartford Courant reported that UConn extended Murray’s contract $558,000 annually along with other coaches, paying them all a substantial amount for their tough role. Luke Murray handles the Huskies’ operations, while Bill Murray has spent the tournament cheering on his son on the courtside before and after games.
