The sixth overall recruit in the class of 2023, D.J. Wagner is a Kentucky Wildcat this season. The 6-foot-3 player is a high school graduate from Camden, New Jersey. Interestingly, both his father and his grandfather were among the top-10 picks in the NBA drafts. The projected lottery pick in next year’s draft is the MVP of the McDonald’s All-American Game of 2023. Additionally, he was one of just three prospects in the Class of 2023 who got an invitation to the USA Basketball mini camp at Colorado Springs held in July. The No.21 of the Kentucky Wildcats plays at the point guard position just like his father and grandfather.
The five-star recruit helped Camden register 25 consecutive victories. Furthermore, he had an impressive average of 18.5 points per game when he was a freshman. As a result, Wagner was awarded the MaxPreps Freshman All-American award. Following this, he became the first third-generational athlete to become a McDonald’s All-American. As a junior, D.J. led Camden to the NJSIAA Group 2 state championship by averaging 19.6 points, 4.3 rebounds, 3.3 assists, and 3.1 steals per game. Also, he was instrumental in Camden keeping a 23–2 record in his senior year, with an average of 22.5 points and 3.3 rebounds.
