As per the Charlotte Observer, Michael Savarino attended Durham Academy where he was a guard. He also played for the Carolina Elite Basketball Association and had all people looking at him like a college basketball prospect. Although his CEBA 17-and-under team was upended by Team Loaded NC’s 16-and-under adidas Gauntlet elite team in a Big Shots tournament, Michael came across as one of the best players on the floor.
As per Langston Wertz JR of the Charlotte Observer, Savarino was a good offensive player who had an outstanding jump shot that a lot of people compared with former Duke star Grayson Allen. During his junior year, Savarino averaged 8 points per contest with three rebounds per match and two assists per game.
“We’ve taken pictures of (Savarino and Allen) together,” Mickie Krzyzewski, Coach K‘s wife, told USA Today in 2014. “They look more like brothers than Michael (Savarino) looks with his brother. Right from the start, we have this tender place in our hearts for Grayson Allen — because he looks like one of my grandkids.”
Savarino was much hyped during his school years but couldn’t convert it into a spectacular college career as he went on to become a walk-on for Duke University under the tutelage of his grandfather Coach K.
Following Coach K’s retirement from the Duke Blue Devils head coach position, Michael entered the transfer portal. During his stint with the Blue Devils, he was mostly benched and averaged just 1.1 points during the 11 games he played during the 2022 season. His mother Debbie Savarino was also an assistant athletics director at Duke.
How Michael Savarino performs with the Violets?
After a day sophomore center Mark Williams declared for the NBA draft, Savarino departed to his new team. As per Fan Nation, Savarino spent almost three years as a walk-on at Duke University. He took to social media to reveal that he would be moving to a Division 3 program where he might get a chance to make it to the starting five. He thus decided to move to the New York University to ply his trade for the Violets.
He wasn’t given much playing time with the Dukes since his first season in 2019-20. He only saw combined action of 29 minutes across the two seasons and could only gather 13 points with 6 rebounds, 1 assist, and 1 steal. His best stat for the Duke was his 4-for-10 clip beyond the arc.
