Born in 1962, Bill Self is one of the best coaches in the league currently. Since 2003, he has been coaching the Kansas Jayhawks to achieve great heights. But, before he started his career as a coach, he was also an impressive player. Self grew up under the guidance of his father who was a girls’ basketball coach at nearby High School. Training under his father, Self showed early signs of his basketball prowess. With his impressive skills and talents, in 1981 he was named Oklahoma High School Basketball Player of the Year. The basketball community quickly recognized his talents as he received a scholarship to play at Oklahoma State University.

But in 1985, Self decided to bench himself as a player and follow in the footsteps of his dad to become a coach. He started his coaching career by working as an assistant coach under Larry Brown at the University of Kansas. Following this, he then became an assistant coach at Oklahoma State University to train under Leonard Hamilton. Coach Self got his first big breakthrough in 1993, as he became a head coach for the Oral Roberts, where he stayed for four seasons before transferring to Tulsa where he led the Golden Hurricanes to their first-ever Elite Eight appearance.

In 2003, after taking a transfer from Illinois, Coach Self finally found his call at the University of Kansas. The Jayhawks hired Self as their head coach after Roy Williams left to coach his former team. Under Coach Self’s incredible guidance, the Jayhawks have reached the heights they never dreamed of. He led the Jayhawks to the Elite Eight in his first season to the 2008 National Championship. He also faced back-to-back challenges, such as a three-game skid in 2012 and recruiting controversies. But Self held his head high and made history.

How’s the team doing in the 2023-24 NCAA season?

Under the leadership of a legendary coach, the Jayhawk boys started this season with a flawless victory against the North Carolina Central Eagles. During this game, Kevin McCullar Jr. was the one who stood out the most as he scored 22 points and secured 6 rebounds with only 24 minutes of playing time. Starting the season with a huge win, the Jayhawks continued their winning streak until it was put to stop by the Marquette Golden Eagles in their fifth game.

However, they learned from their mistakes and came back stronger to secure their fifth win of the season against the Tennessee Volunteers. Since then they have played two more matches and won both of them with an average score difference of 6 points. So far, they have played eight matches and won seven out of them.
