The Auburn Tigers are still searching for their first NCAA title. Come the 2024-25 season, the side has one of the deepest rosters, and the ‘three musketeers’ are looking to carry the SEC team on their backs – Johni Broome, Denver Jones, and Tahaad Pettiford. A challenge for many title contender teams, probably their best chance so far in recent history.
“Think about this: There wasn’t that much expected from Auburn at the start of the season,” coach Bruce Pearl said. “Good team, older team, probably won’t win the league but be a tournament team. All of a sudden, this team is No. 1 in the country for six or seven weeks. Now, a bunch of underdog kids from mid-majors, different levels have to live up to what that expectation is.”
While freshman Tahaad Pettiford is grabbing all the attention, one guard keeping Pettiford on the bench is Jones. The senior has been consistent with his performances and even stepped up his production when his side needed him the most.

In the Sweet Sixteen game, Jones accumulated 20 points shooting 7-of-13 from the field and 4-of-7 from the range. He was not only efficient but clean with his passes, committing just one turnover. Bruce Pearl had his eyes set on Jones while he was building the Tigers’ team from scratch.
“Denver Jones is a very versatile player,” said AU coach Bruce Pearl. “He can do it at both ends of the floor; he can do it off the bounce; he can do it at the foul line, from 3, playmaker. He’s a really, really solid combo guard.” Coach Pearl has nothing but praise for his senior guard. Jones also felt like a ‘family’ with Coach BP’s training techniques and relationship management.

“Main reason I came to Auburn is because it felt like home. It felt like somewhere where it could be a family,” he said. “I told Coach BP I was really big on family and really big on player-coach relationships. That’s one of the main reasons I came here outside of basketball.”
