In the Griffin household, competition wasn’t just part of life—it was life. Whether it was in the driveway, at the gym, or even in the living room, every game mattered. “They’ll all say they’re the best player in the family,” said Pat Massaroni.
Aubrey Griffin wasn’t just playing against her brothers; she was sharpening her edge. Two-on-two. Aubrey and her dad against her brothers, Alan and A.J. “Adrian (A.J.) wanted to win ever since he was 10 or 11 years old,” Adrian Sr. said. “For Alan, it would be fun and games.” Before Aubrey was a UConn Husky, before she made her mark on college basketball, she was just another Griffin kid fighting for bragging rights—learning, competing, and proving she belonged.

Who is Aubrey Griffin’s father, Adrian? Is he a famous NBA coach?
Adrian Griffin Sr. isn’t just Aubrey’s dad—he’s a basketball name. Adrian went undrafted out of Seton Hall but never gave up. After three years in minor leagues, he fought his way into the NBA, carving out a nine-season career as a shooting guard and small forward. He played for the Celtics, the Bulls, the Dallas Mavericks, and the Houston Rockets before finishing it off with the Seattle SuperSonics in 2008.
But his career didn’t stop on the court. He transitioned into coaching, spending years as an assistant for several NBA teams before earning the head coaching job with the Milwaukee Bucks. His journey—full of hard work, resilience, and persistence—became a blueprint for his kids.
“Undrafted out of Seton Hall and spent nine years in the league?” Syracuse associate head coach Adrian Autry said. “Who does that? You don’t do that without a lot of hard work, a tough playing style, and self-confidence.”
Who is Aubrey Griffin’s mother, Audrey Sterling? What does she do?
While Adrian was making plays on the court, Audrey Sterling was making history on the track. She was an All-American track and field athlete at Seton Hall. And she seems to have passed it down to her children. You can see it in the way Aubrey plays—fast, relentless, never backing down from a challenge.
Audrey didn’t turn pro, but her impact was just as powerful. Early morning runs, pep talks before games—she was always there, pushing them to be better.“Our pace of running,” Alan recalled, thinking about those track workouts with his mom. “We can run for a great amount of time.”
Does Aubrey Griffin have any siblings?
Aubrey isn’t the only athlete in the family. Her brothers, Alan and A.J., both played basketball at a high level. Alan played college basketball at Illinois before transferring to Syracuse. After college, he played for the Westchester Knicks in the NBA G League. A.J, on the other hand, was a top recruit in 2021, choosing Duke before moving on to the NBA with the Atlanta Hawks.
“He’s always in the gym, always working,” Aubrey said about Alan. “He’s confident in what he knows he can do because he’s worked to get there.” Aubrey added, “He’s always putting in the extra time to get better.”

Growing up, the Griffin siblings had their own kind of training—intense two-on-two games with their dad. Or at least as intense as family games can get. “The boys were good,” said Adrian Sr., “but Aubrey and I always won because they’d start bickering and arguing about passing to each other.”
Aubrey’s other sibling, Vanessa Griffin, prefers to stay out of the spotlight. Not much is known about her.
