Coach K, undoubtedly one of the most familiar faces of college basketball, owes a large part of his legendary position to the outstanding players he attracted and developed at Duke University. Serving a whopping 42 years at Duke College, he transformed the careers of 208 collegiate athletes. Incredibly, 68 of his proteges were chosen in the NBA Draft, with 42 of them landing highly coveted first-round picks.
Let’s take a look at the NBA star who had the best career under Coach K’s leadership.

Mike Krzyzewski or Coach K has established himself as the most successful coach in NCAA history with a remarkable record of 1,202 career victories at the collegiate level. His capacity to foster and develop NBA talent, though, is what truly distinguishes him from the rest.
Coach K began shaping future NBA stars during his tenure as an assistant at Indiana in the 1974–75 season. John Laskowski, Steve Green, Scott May, Quinn Buckner, Kent Benson, Bob Wilkerson, Tom Abernethy and Wayne Radford were among a group of young players he helped develop, even though he wasn’t the team’s head coach. These players would go on to have successful NBA careers. As he assisted the famous Bob Knight during Indiana’s amazing 31-1 season, these early successes do not technically count toward his career total.
After a brief tenure at Army, where he failed to turn any of his players into NBA players, Coach K settled down at Duke University. His coaching prowess fully shined at Duke, when his influence on the NBA landscape became evident. So, coming to the topic at hand, which NBA star had the best career under Coach K’s leadership?
It’s Christian Laettner.
Donning the legendary Duke Blue Devils jersey with the number 32, Christian Laettner led Duke University to two NCAA championships during his four years there. Laettner played 23 out of 24 NCAA tournament games, winning 21 of them. Laettner’s efforts were so remarkable that Duke University decided to retire his number 32 jersey as a tribute to his long-lasting influence on the team. He was also awarded the prestigious USA Male Basketball Athlete of the Year title in 1991 in honor of his basketball prowess.
The records Laettner made during his days, still hold today even after decades. His name is inscribed in the records for the most points (407), free throws made (142), free throw attempts (167), and games won (21), among other statistics. Despite the numerous historic games he played, his storied game-winning shot against Kentucky in the regional final was one of his most memorable plays.
Adding to his long list of accomplishments, he even made it to the ‘Dream Team,’ as a collegiate basketball player in 1992. He played alongside NBA greats like Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, Larry Bird, Charles Barkley and Karl Malone.
However, while his NCAA career made much noise, his NBA career was rather underwhelming in comparison.
Christian Laettner’s career in the NBA
Laettner entered the NBA with the burden of immense college success on his shoulders after being selected third overall by the Minnesota Timberwolves. Unfortunately, he fell short of the legendary stature he attained in the NCAA. While his NBA All-Rookie First Team selection in his rookie season was an amazing start, his professional career did not reach the heights of his college accomplishments. Despite earning an All-Star spot in 1997, his NBA career was characterized by ups and downs and, in some respects, lagged behind his collegiate fame.
Laettner demonstrated promise in his rookie year by being selected to the NBA All-Rookie First Team. This early success, though, set a standard that would be hard to meet throughout his NBA career. He, however, made it to the 1997 All-Star game, playing on the same court as some of the NBA’s best players.
Christian Laettner, during his NBA career, played for six different teams, including the Minnesota Timberwolves, Atlanta Hawks, Detroit Pistons, Dallas Mavericks, Washington Wizards and the Miami Heat. Yet he was unable to establish a lasting place in the league.
