He started playing basketball while in high school at North Attleborough High School. And was awarded the Massachusetts Gatorade Player of the Year. His defensive skills got sharper at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Where he went four seasons and earned accolades for his defense.

Mike Babul had a good career full of success and dedication. He was a three time Atlantic 10 Conference All-Defensive Team selection and earned All-Academic Team honors as a player. As he transitioned to coaching he became very good at developing players and encouraging talent.
Babul previously held roles with other well respected programs such as Wagner College and the Long Island Nets. He also worked at the NBA G-League affiliate of the Brooklyn Nets before coming to Thayer Academy. He had become a well known thing in basketball circles for his expertise in defense and player development.

While Babul’s contributions to Thayer Academy were much more than wins and losses. Very quickly, the team was transformed into a competitive force primarily due to his administrative acumen and coaching strategies. Babul guided the boys’ varsity team to 13 victories his first season and a winning record for the first time in several seasons.
He was admired by the coaches and players for his ability instill self confidence and discipline. Thayer Academy basketball was greatly improved under his guidance. According to athletic directors in the Independent School League, who praised his leadership.
Babul considered his job at Thayer Academy his ‘dream job’. He was enthusiastic about teaching the game and caring for budding talent in every practice and in every game. As a coach, people looked up to him, but also as a mentor that preached hard work and resilience.
