Indiana basketball coach Mike Woodson has been under scrutiny for his coaching style, which has led to a growing concern among fans. The sparks resurfaced following the team’s latest encounter with the Scarlet Knights. The Knights led 30–27 at halftime, with Kel’el Ware, Mackenzie Mgbako, and Malik Reneau scoring 13 points each. But Indiana turnovers continued to coach’s chagrin.

Xavier Johnson led the team with five points but was dismissed for a foul in the second quarter. Rutgers maintained their lead throughout the game, thanks to their strong defense and ability to capitalize on turnovers. This loss and subsequent press conference have raised concerns about Mike Woodesen’s coaching tenure.

The Hoosiers have given Woodson a $1 million per year raise, totaling $4.2 million a year through 2027. However, unless something changes from Woodson’s original contract, his buyout before April 1, 2025, is 100% of the money left on his deal. Indiana has attempted the second-fewest 3-pointers in the country and is only making 27.2% of those, which is against the efficiency of modern offensive basketball.

The decision to fire Woodson and avoid bottoming out may earn him another year, but it’s uncertain if this will be the case. Despite the concerns raised by fans, the Hoosiers have shown their commitment to Woodson by giving him a substantial raise. However, his original contract terms may pose a potential financial obstacle if changes are not made before April 1, 2025.

Additionally, Indiana’s style of play, with a lack of emphasis on 3-pointers and low shooting efficiency, goes against the current trend of offensive basketball. While firing Woodson could potentially prevent a decline in performance, it remains uncertain whether this decision will ultimately be made.

The price tag on a firing and the lack of utter bottoming-out may earn Woodson at least another year. However, the pressure is mounting on Woodson to make significant changes and address the team’s offensive shortcomings. Fans and alumni are growing increasingly frustrated with the lack of progress and are calling for a new direction. If the Hoosiers fail to show improvement next season, it may be difficult for Woodson to justify keeping his job.

But he needed surgery since he had a herniated disc in his back. In spite of this loss, Woodson came back to galvanize Indiana’s comeback, guiding the Hoosiers to six straight wins and the Big Ten championship.
