Flau’jae Johnson says during the recruiting process, every school but LSU told her she had to choose between basketball and her rap career. The Tigers let her do both.
Flau’jae Johnson knew she had it at 8 years old. At her late father’s birthday celebration in Savannah, Georgia, a young Flau’jae told her mother she wanted to perform. “Girl, you’re not performing at this party. You’re a kid,” her mom Kia laughed at the time, but Flau’jae wasn’t going to take no for an answer. Brought up to the stage by her uncle Dominique, Flau’jae rocked the crowd and put on a show. She had the place bopping. It was merely the first step on a journey as both a basketball player and rapper that has turned heads around the world.
Her dad, the rapper Camoflauge, always knew his daughter was destined to do something big. Unfortunately, his life was cut short too soon, but Camoflauge’s vision for his daughter continues to live on through Flau’jae. “I feel like his legacy was cut short.. It was taken from him. That’s why I sometimes feel like it’s my duty to finish what he started,” she reflected. Now, Flau’jae Johnson has combined her father’s music legacy with her basketball achievement into an incredible story of talent, family, and persistence. Let’s now dive into how cultural, familial, and spiritual foundations shaped her.
