Last night UConn’s women’s basketball had a weird start to the game. The team was left dumbfounded about what came their way following fracas among officials. The audience also spectated the comeback of UConn’s long-awaited point guard Paige Bueckers after recovering from her ACL injury last year. More to the surprise was the unexpected 2-point lead for UConn before the game took off.

With this performance, the Huskies have a pretty big chance to move up their spot in the AP poll in the coming week. Last time they shot up rank 1 was two years ago in March 2021.

UConn’s Azzi Fudd walks up to the free throw line and the referee passes her the ball to make shots. Fudd, by shooting a couple of free throws, gave UConn a 2-0 lead even before the game started. The reason behind this was an unconventional foul imposed on the Dayton Flyers.

One of Dayton’s starting five members and guard Destiny Bohanon walked out on the court wearing the No.53 jersey, whereas her registered jersey number is 33. This foul gave leverage to the Huskies and they were awarded a pair of free throws because No.53 was not on Dayton’s official lineup sheet.

Nailing the two free throws, Fudd gave an opening tip 2-0 lead to the Huskies. Moreover, it was indeed a non-traditional way to start the season for UConn’s head coach Geno Auriemma.

As the game moved forward, UConn marked a 26-13 lead after the first quarter. UConn then moved up on this lead with a score of 59-31 at halftime. The Huskies thrashed Dayton’s Flyers with a 102-58 win. Paige Bueckers’ indeed boosted her team.

Bueckers making a comeback

Paige made a shining comeback to the court. Former Big East Player of the Year scored 8 points, gripped 7 rebounds, and delivered 4 assists in just 21 minutes into the game.

It was her first game since UConn lost the 2022 national championship to South Carolina. Nearly after 584 days. More than a year’s time Bueckers spent recovering from her knee and ACL injury that occurred in August last year while she was playing a pick-up game. However, Bueckers announced her return to the court in August 2023 after getting fully cleared to play again.

Now, after having an unconventional start to the season, UConn’s victory is making other opponents sweat off as they dare not commit a foul if they wish to stay up in their championship run.
