JuJu Watkins has been going strong in her freshman year. With an average of 27.7 points per game, Watkins has become a core player for the University of Southern California Trojans. She is regarded to be a contender for all the major National Player of the Year awards and is seen as a threat to Caitlin Clark’s dominance in this season. If that wasn’t enough, Watkins leveled another coveted record that has all the fans comparing her to the USC legend Cheryl Miller.

Watkins took the floor against the Oregon Ducks on Friday and smashed an astounding 33 points. This made her add her name to a noteworthy record that was first established during the 1984-85 season.

With her recent rampage of 33 points, Watkins registered her 10th game of 30 or more points this season. This tied her for the same with Miller who also had besotted 10 games of 30 or more points 39 years ago, which has been a record since then. Watkins’s first 30-point game came during her debut match against the Ohio State Buckeyes and the Los Angeles-born has come a long way since then.

Even in this match against the Ducks, Watkins shot 12-for-25 field goals and a decent 37.8% three-pointers. She also had a free throw percentage of 85.7%. Her on-point shooting skills have been a major reason behind her success, and it is this characteristic of her game style that has helped her decimate unbelievable numbers this season. Other than that, Watkins also grabbed 8 rebounds and 3 assists.

The current game against the Oregon marked her second three-consecutive game streak of smoking 30 points or more. Her previous 3-game 30 or more points streak had come from her 5th game onwards against the Penn State and ended against the San Diego.

If this consistency wasn’t enough, Watkins also gave a view of her high ceiling to her fans when she thrashed a career-best 51 points against the Stanford Cardinal. For her exceptional performance, the Trojans’ head coach Lindsay Gottlieb had a few words of praise to say about the rising star.

What did Gottlieb say?

“I can’t say enough about our young superstar. She keeps getting better, she’s coachable and she learns from the film,” Gottlieb stated. With Watkins’s exemplary display, the Trojans cruised to a victory by a blowout margin against the Ducks. While the Trojans scored 88 points, the Ducks could only pot 51. And now the Trojans have a 19-4 record.

With this performance, Watkins demonstrated that she is the alpha of the team, and her fans hope that she keeps her on-song performance to register many more records in the coming games. And while doing so, the USC too can edge past their opponents which would be a double delight for their fans.
