After last Sunday’s win over North Carolina, the UConn women’s basketball team has managed to maintain its No. 2 rank in the AP Top 25 poll for the third week of the 2024-25 season. Credit goes to the team’s standout players: Paige Bueckers, the first Player of the Week this season, and forward Sarah Strong, the Freshman of the Week for two consecutive weeks. While Bueckers delivered an impressive 29 points, Sarah contributed a double-double with 14 points and 13 rebounds to the team’s total.
The Huskies, ranked No. 2 in the preseason poll, finally knocked the Tar Heels down with their 69-58 victory. However, they still haven’t been able to surpass the reigning NCAA champions, No. 1 South Carolina, who remain on top with all 31 first-place votes.
Call it a reality check, Geno Auriemma isn’t satisfied. After revealing 3 signees for the 2025 class, the HC reveals he has more to add to the roster ahead. According to an X post by Maggie Vanoni, “Geno Auriemma re the Huskies’ Class of 2025 signees: ‘We’re not done yet.’”

This comes after the Huskies signed point guard Kelis Fisher, wing Blanca Quinonez, and post Gandy Malou Mamel. “I think we’ve got a pretty good mix of athletes coming in,” Auriemma had said. But looks like after 27 conference tournaments, 23 Final Fours, and celebrating 11 national championships, the HC wants to continue bringing in the best he can.

As of now, the Huskies have three senior players on the roster: Paige Bueckers, Kaitlyn Chen, and Aubrey Griffin. This means they’ll be departing from UConn for the WNBA or another stage in the upcoming year, leaving big shoes to fill. To address this void, the Huskies’ head coach secured the aforementioned three commits and a possible few more soon.

While Agot Makeer remains a primary target for the 2025 class, ten former targets were also in consideration. Of those, seven have already committed to other colleges, while the remaining three—Bella Hines, Zakiyah Johnson, and Deniya Prawl—have not listed UConn among their final choices.
So Makeer, the top 10 recruit, appears to be a potential signee. As per her interview with On3, her list of final 6 colleges included UConn. “It’s been my dream school ever since I was a kid. Them reaching out and wanting me to be part of their team has been kind of shocking,” she stated. The no.4 prospect also finds Auriemma and staff’s ability to shape pros and appealing aspect. However, the 16-year-old has strong opinions about 5 more programs on her list. So it is still unclear where she is headed. But Auriemma would sure prefer her on the roster.

While UConn may appear to have a complete lineup with the three new commits replacing the three departing seniors, the head coach’s words suggest he is still strategizing. What else would you expect from a coach who just celebrated a significant milestone? Auriemma recently broke the NCAA record for the most career wins, achieving 1,216 victories after the Huskies defeated the North Carolina Tar Heels 69–58.
“Now, I coach the same way I raise my grandkids. Today, I’m more of, ‘I’m only here to help you get what you want; I already have everything I want,'” Auriemma remarked. Despite surpassing former Stanford coach Tara VanDerveer, Geno remains as driven as ever. Satisfied with coaching but never satisfied with results, the question lingers: what does he have planned for the upcoming season?
