North Carolina basketball, once the epitome of college hoops excellence, is in a tailspin. The Tar Heels are mired in a season filled with inconsistency, missed opportunities, and a rapidly declining reputation. Despite their talent, the struggles are evident on both ends of the court. With a 6-5 record and currently sitting first in the ACC, their performance is far from reassuring. Now, a crushing loss to Florida in the Jumpman Invitational has left fans and analysts alike questioning whether Hubert Davis can salvage a season that seems to be slipping through his fingers.
Theo Pinson, former shooting guard for the Tar Heels, pulled no punches when discussing the team’s issues in a recent episode of the To the Baha podcast. “We play well every game; our consistency is just bad,” Pinson stated. “We can’t put two halves together. You have shown everyone that you can play with the best—you’ve shown that Florida is a good team, Kansas is a good team, Auburn, you compete against Auburn. Auburn’s just a better all-around team than we are right now. We can’t compete with Auburn.”
While it’s clear that UNC has the potential to compete at a high level, their inability to maintain focus for the entirety of a game has cost them dearly. Pinson didn’t stop there, stressing the importance of mindset and intensity.

“All it is, is intensity and want-to,” he emphasized, imploring his former team to elevate their effort and mental toughness. “Y’all have told yourselves all it is. You start creating turnovers, you get a couple layups, you hit a couple shots, then you start barking and put a little doubt in the other team’s head.”
The inconsistency Pinson mentions was glaring in the Florida game, where the Tar Heels mounted a furious second-half comeback but ultimately fell short, 90-84. The numbers from the Florida loss highlight just how badly things went for UNC. The Tar Heels shot a dismal 17.9% from beyond the arc, making just five of their 28 three-point attempts.
Pinson, ever the defender of Carolina’s tradition, wasn’t shy about calling out the team’s lack of identity. “Everyone’s like the tradition at Carolina’s gone. No, the h-ll it’s not, bro,” he said with conviction. “Florida felt what the h-ll the Carolina tradition is. That whole second half, that Florida team would get sm–ked by any team we played on that we were on.”
Despite their best efforts, the Tar Heels couldn’t turn the tide. While they showed flashes of brilliance, the glaring issues on both ends of the court were impossible to ignore, leaving UNC to wonder: what went wrong, and can they fix it in time?
Free throws, missed opportunities, and a legacy on the line: HC Davis’s struggles reach a tipping point
They also struggled at the free-throw line, connecting on only 68.4% of their attempts, compared to Florida’s 70.4%. Despite a valiant 29-point performance from R.J. Davis, the lack of perimeter shooting and missed free throws ultimately proved too much to overcome. In a game where Florida jumped to a 35-17 lead in the first half, UNC’s inability to capitalize on their opportunities was painfully evident.
Therefore, the Tar Heels ultimately couldn’t hold onto their momentum, losing a crucial rebound battle to the Gators, who finished with 46 rebounds to UNC’s 36. The Gators also capitalized on North Carolina’s turnovers, scoring 24 points off the Tar Heels’ mistakes.
