IOWA women’s Hawkeye put up a stellar show during the NCAA championship when they advanced to the Finals to compete against Louisiana State University Tigers in April. Although, they lost on winning the championship but left an indelible mark on spectators and critics alike. In the midst of glory, another IOWA star Caitlin has joined the list with other prestigious WNBA colleagues namely A’ja Wilson, Sabrina Ionescu, and Breanna Stewart.
For the unversed, Caitlin Clark is a point guard for IOWA Hawkeye who was previously named the MVP for the FIBA U-19 World Cup in 2021. Let us have a look at what she achieved now.

Fans were delighted when Caitlin Clark was honored with the Naismith Award for her outstanding performance during the NCAA Championship 2023. The award was given during the halftime of IOWA Hawkeye’s football game against Western Michigan Broncos on Saturday.

For the unversed, the Naismith Award is presented to outstanding basketball players at the college level by the Atlanta Tip-Off Club. The award is named after Dr. James Naismith who was the inventor of basketball. The award is decided by a voting system among the 30 best players for the season with the board of selectors and the fans having the final say.
Clark was announced the winner of the coveted award on Wednesday for her spectacular performance during the NCAA 2022-23 season. Her whopping 41 points during the Elite Eight contest with Louisville Cardinals guided her team to the Final Four. Overall, Clark averaged an outstanding 27.8 points with 7.1 rebounds per contest and 8.6 assists per game during the regular season. Her performance was such that she got compared to NBA great Steph Curry.

With this prize, she won the list of elite athletes comprising A’ja Wilson, Sabrina Ionescu, and Breanna Stewart.

Who were the past winners for the award
Sabrina Ionescu had won the award during 2019-20 season when playing for Oregon whereas A’ja Wilson had been named the winner 2017-18 season when representing South Carolina. UConn Huskies former player Breanna Stewart sits atop with Cheryl Miller for winning the Naismith Award a record number of three times. Thus, with this award, Caitlin would be looking forward to a stupendous career ahead, especially in the WNBA much similar to how her predecessors have.
Meanwhile, as per ESPN, Clark would have to face a major decision as the new season ends deciding on whether to join the WNBA draft or stay in IOWA for the fifth season.
