The South Carolina Gamecocks have become a talking point this NCAA season and for the right reasons. Undeniably, they have shown immense improvement from their previous games. To top that off, their rankings are only rising as they continue their fairly decent streak of 18-3 in their 2023-24 campaign.

As a result, many are demanding that the Gamecocks should be considered a potential candidate for the national title. Following the same thought, even popular faces of college basketball are petitioning the drill.

Is South Carolina a potential NCAA title contender?

The skills that this talented roster is bringing to the hardwood are hard to ignore. CBS Sports NCAA insider and the host of College Hoops Today, Jon Rothstein, is also not able to look the other way. In a discussion, Rothstein took note of the Gamecocks in the SEC. He said, “You have to start talking about the Gamecocks as a bona fide contender for the SEC regular-season title. They’re going up, up, up in the rankings!”

South Carolina has moved past ranked teams, including Kentucky (79-62) and Tennessee (63-59), like a breeze. Further, they have won every but one non-conference game. While the Clemson Tigers, Alabama Crimson Tide, and Georgia Bulldogs dished out some bitter defeats, the Gamecocks do not seem to be backing down.

There is a reason why Lamont Paris and his South Carolina team stand second in the SEC. Currently standing at the top of the defense ranks, they do not let their opponents cross 64.5 points per game on average. On the offense front, the Gamecocks have also improved from their previous campaigns. They currently average 73.2 points per game with a 44.1% field goal average.

Notably, South Carolina has a promising roster in line. The individual performances of many of its players are playing a major part. Their junior guard, Meechie Johnson, averages 15.7 points per game. Along with him is the senior forward BJ Mack, averaging 13.9 points per game. Nevertheless, from being predicted as the last SEC team to ranking second – all in one NCAA season – the Gamecocks have turned the tides in their favor.
