Kim Mulkey is one of the best basketball coaches in the professional basketball scene. While she was thrust into national headlines due to her success with the LSU Tigers, she had long established her career before meeting Angel Reese and the team. She excelled for 21 memorable seasons while playing for Baylor University, leading the Lady Bears to three national titles. Consistently excelling during her time at Baylor, she earned the title of the AP Coach of the Year three times, a significant honor.

As part of a historic ceremony honoring Louisiana Tech University’s illustrious sporting history, six renowned athletes had their statues built in the Sarah and A.L. Williams Champions Plaza in Ruston, Louisiana. Kim Mulkey, the renowned head coach of the LSU Tigers women’s basketball team, took the lead among the recipients.

The world of collegiate basketball has been forever changed by Mulkey’s incredible coaching career. And her most recent victory with LSU has added another chapter to her storied career.

Five other sporting greats who have made a big impact in their respective sports joined Mulkey in this honorable lineup. The statues of Karl Malone, Teresa Weatherspoon, Terry Bradshaw, Willie Roaf and the late Fred Hoyte joined the legendary coach.

Meanwhile, it was an emotional moment for Angel Reese and Mulkey’s daughter, Makenzie Fuller. A former Baylor Bears player, Makenzie Fuller took to Twitter to share her pride in her mother. She tweeted, “That’s my momma.”

On the other hand, one of LSU’s leading players, Angel Reese took to her Instagram story to share the happy news. She shared a picture of Kim Mulkey, standing next to her statue, titling it “GOAT.”

Kim Mulkey, a native of Louisiana, made an enduring impression on the world of women’s basketball. Her career began while she was a member of the Lady Techsters playing as the point guard. She won championships in the AIAW and NCAA in 1981 and 1982. Mulkey returned to the university after her playing career was over where she took on the role of an assistant coach for 15 seasons.

Mulkey left an unparalleled legacy at Louisiana Tech, which includes a stellar 130-6 win-loss record on the court. She made waves as an assistant coach as well, compiling an astounding 430-68 record. Mulkey continued to excel as a coach by taking the helm at Baylor, where she led the Bears to three NCAA championships.

Kim Mulkey became LSU’s head coach in 2021, and her influence was felt right away. She led the Tigers to the national stage in just her second season with the team.

However, Kim Mulkey’s influence extends beyond the walls of Louisiana Tech. Mulkey won a second national championship with the LSU Lady Tigers in April, her second season in charge of the team. And as the 2023-2024 NCAA season opens, she will once again lead a star-studded LSU team, hopefully to their second victory. Her Lady Tigers begin their official practice on Monday, September 25.
