Tennis star Coco Gauff recently made history as she won the Women’s US Open title earlier this week. The 19-year-old became the only American teenager after Serena Williams to win the title on home soil earning plenty of plaudits from fans and celebrities alike. While NBA stars Kevin Durant and Jimmy Butler were present to cheer on Gauff, many basketball stars left their wishes on social media as the youngster beat Aryna Sabalenka in the Finals. The well-wishes for the Atlanta native weren’t reserved to NBA and WNBA stars alone, though, as many NCAA athletes showed their support for Coco as well.

Rivals Angel Reese and Catilin Clark alongside Stanford’s Cameron Brink were all seen honoring Gauff’s win as the three took to Instagram to post their support. Iowa star Catilin Clark recently posted another story of Gauff as the tennis prodigy achieved another significant feat during her US Open win.

Coco Gauff’s US Open victory was a milestone event in the youngster’s career as she won her first-ever Grand Slam title. Having lost the French Open Finals to Iga Swiatek last year the 19-year-old seemed destined for a similar fate this year as she blew the first set 6-2 against the Belarusian Sabalenka. While many were convinced that she would lose, the 19-year-old shocked everyone in attendance as she made an incredible comeback to win the final sets 6-3 and 6-2.

This remarkable win was watched and celebrated across the country as it set a record that was shared on Instagram by Catilin Clark. According to the post shared by Clark, Coco Gauff’s win garnered 3.4 million views in the US which was significantly more than what the Men’s US Open Final garnered, casting a shadow over Djokovic’s win.

The Men’s Final which featured Novak Djokovic and World No. 3 Daniil Medvedev only managed a network viewership of 2.3 million, which was 1.1 million less than what the Women’s Finals garnered.

Interestingly, this statistic shows a resurgent in viewership numbers in Women’s tennis which had dwindled ever since Serena Williams’ retirement in 2022.

Coco Gauff denied similarities to Serena Williams before her historic win

Not only is the 19-year-old prodigy the only teenager to win a grand slam title since Serena but she also shares many qualities with her in the court. But despite the many similarities the youngster recently put those comparisons to bed as she refused to be compared to the Tennis G.O.A.T.

Speaking to ESPN before her matchup against Sabalenka the youngster was in full praise of Williams as she looked to pave her own path. Explaining her reluctance in being collated with the 25x grand slam winner she stated, “I’d hope to do half of what she did. But I’m not going to compare myself to her. She’s someone that I look up to.”
