UConn loyalists are livid. And their fandom fury fell on a Hollywood hunk who had turned up as a cheerleader for the team grappling with injuries this season. Unable to wrap their heads around their team’s defeat, the spectators targeted the actor for his court posturing and blamed him for the match result. But why?
It was all because of a coincidence. A coincidence involving Jason Sudeikis, a.k.a. Ted Lasso. As the actor and comedian accompanied Sue Bird, Diana Taurasi, and USWNT legend Megan Rapinoe for the Huskies’ recent game at the Gampel Pavilion, the team suffered a decisive 67-82 defeat at the hands of Notre Dame. The game slipped from the Huskies by halftime when the score read 35-44 in favor of the Fighting Irish. This was a tumultuous loss for the packed stadium, and they believed Ted Lasso was to blame.

The UConn program posted a picture of Sudeikis admiring their gaming mascot, the husky Jonathan XV. “Find someone who looks at you the way @TedLasso looks at Jonathan XV,” read the tweet. But as the Huskies’ official handle wrote this, all fans could think of was, ‘Find ways to ban Jason Sudeikis from UConn Huskies games.’ That’s because even the last game Ted Lasso attended ended in a loss for the Huskies. While fans made that connection and set it in stone that he was somehow responsible for the loss, head coach Geno Auriemma gave his thoughts.
Part of the reason was their star player, Paige Bueckers. “I don’t know if you saw, I think it was in the first half when Paige went down, she smacked her face against the court, and I don’t think she was the same coming out of it. I thought she was out of it for the rest of the game,” Auriemma said after the game. Bueckers has her worst field goal percentage of the season, making 5-of-17. That, coupled with Nika Muhl being fouled out in the second half, led to them unraveling.
Despite the real reasons for the Huskies’ defeat, fans found it easier to pin Jason Sudeikis for their frustrations. And they ensured everyone knew it as they made the Huskies post their own public anti-Sudeikis zone.

Paige Bueckers & Co. fought against Notre Dame and Sudeikis’ “anti-UConn curse”
The last time Jason Sudeikis attended a UConn Huskies game was when the men’s team went to Allen Fieldhouse. The result? The Kansas Jayhawks narrowly edged out the Huskies, 69-65. With his second appearance at a Huskies game – which ended with another defeat – one fan wrote, “Somehow the loss was Jason’s fault. It’s the only explanation.”

When another made the case that his appearance for Iowa’s game against Bowling Green ended in Iowa winning, they replied, “There’s gotta [be] some anti-UConn curse that he carries cuz he was also there when the men’s team lost at K*nsas😭” The Notre Dame loss was shocking for the UConn fans who had expected their team to win the match, considering it was a home game. And the fact that UConn (8th) was ranked higher than the Fighting Irish (15th).
Seeing the common connection between the Kansas and the Notre Dame game, fans did not hold back while blaming the 48-year-old. Jumping on the bandwagon, one wrote, “Stop going to UConn games @jasonsudeikis.” Another expressed in a short and not-so-sweet remark, “Ban him.”
