The Duke Blue Devils have been making headlines for defeating the No. 2 Auburn Tigers in a huge upset. It was a tough game of offense, where Duke had to match Auburn with sharp shooting, ultimately ending the night in an 84-78 win. But amid Cooper Flagg and Isaiah Evans’ heroics, one senior who has been mostly on the bench for the season has made headlines in the latest Hollywood breakup drama.

In a surprising turn of events, singer-songwriter Sabrina Carpenter and actor Barry Keoghan broke up recently, sending shockwaves through the community. The rumor mill worked overtime amid accusations of cheating and PR stunts, and the latest to arrive is one that points the finger at Carpenter from an affiliate page of Barstool Sports.

“🚨BREAKING🚨 Rumors are swirling that Barry Keoghan and Sabrina Carpenter have broken up after she was allegedly caught in the DMs of Duke MBB player Stanley Borden,” posted Barstool Blue Devils on X. The bio of the page declares it is not affiliated with Duke but is connected to the digital media company from which it takes its name. The question is – is the rumor true or false? As for the truth of the statement, the short answer is: Probably no.

Keoghan and Carpenter reportedly dated for almost a year when pictures of the two at dinner in Los Angeles started circulating around the internet. They had first met each other at Paris Fashion Week in September 2023 and regularly posted pictures of and with each other on Instagram.

The Oscar-nominated actor even appeared in a music video for Carpenter’s “Please Please Please” earlier this year, with the singer dropping high praise on her boyfriend. “I was like, ‘Who’s the greatest actor that I can find for this music video?’ And he was next to me in a chair,” Carpenter had said. “And he was so excited about it.”

But the couple ultimately called it quits, as a source confirmed to PEOPLE. The fan backlash was immediate as rumors swirled, forcing Keoghan to put out a statement asking fans to “Please be respectful,” although neither he nor Carpenter has publicly commented on the breakup in direct terms. Now the rumor about Stanley Borden is brought in.

Did Sabrina Carpenter's rumored DM scandal overshadow Duke's epic win against Auburn?

Have an interesting take?

While of course, it’s unlikely the persons involved will comment on unsavory things about themselves, the lack of response is not the only thing. No media outlets have reported on it, although the rumor has caused a firestorm online.

In all truth, it’s probably just a rumor. The 22-year-old Blue Devil, who spent the entire last season on the bench, might be focusing on his college hoops career this season more than anything. As for Duke basketball, with the men’s team receiving the Academic Excellence Award recently, will be aiming to win the next game against Louisville. And depending on star freshman recruit Cooper Flagg and his heroics.

Cooper Flagg has impressed even Kevin Durant

The only non-NBA player on the USA Select Team in July, Cooper Flagg was not even a collegiate player yet. He had just led the Florida-based Montverde Academy boys’ basketball team to its eighth national championship and was about to join Duke University. Once he did, there was no one he did not impress.

Suns star Kevin Durant, who would have played against Flagg in the USA Select Team vs. Team USA game in July if not for a calf injury, said afterward, “He looks like a he– of a player. He’s 17 years old coming in here playing like a [veteran] almost. No emotion. Just going out there and doing his job. That’s a good sign.”

LeBron James too has lauded the young talent, calling him the future face of Team USA. That is not to say there were no troubles adjusting to college ball and its fair share of challenges.

But so far, Cooper Flagg is exactly what he has been advertised as and is only going to go up from here. The projected No. 1 draft pick in the 2025 season might have some competition but he makes retaining that position look easy. What a jackpot for Duke!
