With over three million followers on his Instagram page, Mikey Williams is one of the most influential young players. Born on June 26, 2004, he started showing early signs of his basketball prowess. At just the age of 12 years, he achieved his first dunk during an official game in 2017. While he was in eighth grade, he joined the North Coast Blue Chips AAU team. There, he caught the attention of the basketball community while playing alongside Bronny James, the son of NBA legend LeBron James.
As a freshman, he was named MaxPreps National Freshman of the Year as he averaged an impressive 29.9 points, 6.7 rebounds, and 4.9 assists per game. During his recruitment time, he received offers from several Division-I programs like Arizona and Arizona State. After some time, he announced his commitment to the University of Memphis, which will be starting in 2023-24. But as soon as his career was about to take off, he suffered soul-breaking setbacks.
Why did Williams lose more than $3 Million?
Being a player who was making the headlines every day with his extraordinary skills, Williams secured several NIL deals. But what had everyone’s jaws dropped was his deal with a global footwear company, Puma. His deal is estimated to be over $3 Million, but this also recently blew up on his face.
After LaceClips, Puma also canceled their deal with Mikey following up the changes he is facing. This is a major setback for the player, as this not only affects his financial landscape but also questions his future in basketball.
From becoming a household name to potentially facing jail time
In April, Mikey Williams was arrested on the charges of assault with a deadly weapon. Although he was released after a $50,000 bail, this nightmare for Williams is far from over. It was found out that he fired the gun at a car full of people, which can now result in him facing 30 years of jail time.

Currently, Williams isn’t allowed to attend the University of Memphis due to ongoing legal matters. But this is not the worst part of his story. If he is found guilty of even one of the felony charges, his career would be officially over. And even if he makes it out of this disheartening setback, this will still make a huge impact on his future career in basketball.
However, nothing can be said for sure now about where his career will go from here. As the case goes to trial, many fans would be hoping to hear the good news.
