It’s a rare occasion when you have a birth name fitting your game on the basketball court. Solo Ball is that lucky guy. The UConn Huskies guard was born Solomon Ball, but hardly anyone recognizes him as ‘Solomon’. The name ‘solo’ has stuck with him since his freshman year in high school and has become his identity ever since. Incidentally, he wears jersey no ‘1’.

“When people call me Solomon, it just throws me off. Like, my mom doesn’t even really call me Solomon, it’s only when she’s mad, really,” he said. “Or really like my close family, like my grandma calls me Solomon and my aunts, but nothing really past that. So whenever I hear it, it’s just kind of weird.”

His head coach at UConn, Dan Hurly also ‘singles’ him out for his impact and game. Talking about Solo’s work ethic and gameplay, Hurly mentioned, “He wants to go from a supporting actor to a leading man on a championship team.” Nothing wrong about it Dan. A player of his caliber and with the amount of work he put in the gym; he deserves to be a lead man.

The hard work and determination traits were quite visible from the star guard’s young age. 7-year-old Soloman (as he was yet to be known as Solo) chose basketball over football and baseball after a small gift of a hoop in the driveway started a series of intense pickup games. By the age of 10, he had decided his career path and declared that he would be a professional basketball player. “It was going to happen; it was just a matter of when.” Were his words when he set his eyes on the hoop.

Mike Ball, his father, took it from there– getting him prepared for the career he had chosen. Watching a game? That wasn’t enough. Solo was asked to do push up during commercial breaks. Years in, he developed into an elite shooter with a 7-foot wingspan.

Here’s how Solo Ball fared at the high school level, and on the commercial front.
