The Vermont Catamounts registered one of the most thrilling last-minute NCAA victories this season. In a nail-biting contest, they handed The Yale Bulldogs a heartbreaking 66-65 defeat on Sunday. A last-second heroics from junior guard TJ Long ensured that Vermont went home winning points.
Despite a 5-point lead in the closing minute, Yale couldn’t hold on to their nerve before Long stole the victory from under their nose. Further, this loss is a huge blow for the campaign for Yale as they were looking to get on track after their victory against Stony Brook.
The Vermont Catamounts steal one

The Vermont Catamounts were in the lead in a neck-to-neck opening half. TJ Long was their standout performer doing the bulk of the scoring for them. Forward Danny Wolf and junior guard Bez Mbeng stood up for Yale and showed resistance to Yale. Consequently, Vermont ended the first half with a 28-26 advantage over the Bulldogs. The game was in the balance as neither of the two teams held the upper hand. Evidently, everyone in the Patrick Gym arena held on to their seats following this nerve-racking battle.
Things got tighter in the second half as Yale continued its prolific scoring. Apparently, four players from Yale’s locker room had double-digit scores next to their names. Additionally, Danny Wolf registered his double-double for the night and was going strong. With just 3.8 seconds left in the game, Yale was looking pretty for a win until they gave possession of the ball to Vermont by committing a foul. This was the snitch that the Catamounts needed and they handed the ball to their 6′ 4″ guard TJ Long.
Following this, Long hit a 3-pointer and leveled the scores, but then he was fouled again. He then converted the free throw and brought home a dramatic victory for the Catamounts.

TJ Long finished as the top scorer for Vermont with 23 points and 4 rebounds along with 2 assists in his 37 minutes. Moreover, the 20-year-old is having a decent season so far for Vermont. He’s averaging 13.1 points and 2.7 rebounds along with 1.4 assists per game. Furthermore, he carries an impressive field goal percentage of 46.5 in the season so far.
The NCAA tournament has had yet another wild and thrilling night to treat its fans. Vermont entered the Patrick Gym Arena as underdogs but they completely turned around the game in the closing moments.
