On Sunday at the FedExForum, Jahvon Quinerly of the Memphis basketball team once again proved to be a game-changer by scoring another game-winning 3-pointer with only 3.2 seconds remaining on the clock, leading the Tigers to a 62-59 victory against SMU. This was Quinerly’s second game-winner in a row after he made a similar shot against Tulsa with just 4 seconds remaining in the game. On the other hand, SMU’s winning streak of four games came to an end with the defeat, leaving the team with much to ponder. All in all, it was an intense game of basketball, with Memphis proving to be the better side in the end.

By defeating SMU, a team known for their strong defense and considered one of the top defensive teams in the nation, No. 15 Memphis was able to extend their winning streak to eight games, solidifying itself as a formidable force within the American Athletic Conference.

Memphis improved much on the glass in the second half, though it was still far from ideal. In the last minute of play, the Tigers outrebounded SMU 26–18, but the Mustangs still managed to pull down seven offensive rebounds. But Memphis had five offensive rebounds of their own in the second half, which significantly assisted Hardaway’s squad in turning the tide.

Earlier this week in Tulsa, Quinerly made the game-winning shot in the final seconds. He made a 3-pointer with four seconds left, and the game ended 78-75 in his favor. Quinerly’s heroics on Sunday came down to a dribble in front of Mustang guard Chuck Harris, a stride back on the left wing, and a jumper that broke a 58-58 tie.

Actually, Quinerly was the second option on the play that the Memphis coaching staff had designed. When asked about the comparison to the Tulsa shot, Quinerly replied, “I was surprised they didn’t deny me the ball,” before stating, “It just happened.” It simply occurred naturally.

A run into the Memphis star

Jahvon Quinerly, a highly touted recruit, joined the Villanova basketball team in his freshman season to replace the departed Jalen Brunson. However, he struggled to make an impact and expressed frustration on social media, leading to speculation about his commitment to the team. Quinerly eventually apologized for his controversial post but decided to transfer from Villanova.

He later committed to the University of Alabama but had to sit out a year due to transfer rules.
