A multi-talented athlete who eventually funneled his abilities into basketball—RJ Luis Jr. wasn’t always dedicated to hoops. As a kid, he dabbled in baseball, football, soccer, tennis, and even karate. But after seventh grade, he had to make a choice: dribble a soccer ball or dribble a basketball. He picked the latter, and St. John’s University should probably send him a thank-you card because that decision certainly helped them clinch the 2025 Big East title—their first in 25 years.
His decision has definitely been paying in various ways and St. John’s head coach Rick Pitino has made it clear that RJ is the real deal.
“I’m expecting big things from Rj,” Pitino once said. “He just needed physical maturity. He looks great, improved his shooting and is a wonderful young man.” RJ’s dedication is truly remarkable. Imagine continuing your family’s storied history of athletes, with your own journey beginning as early as age five!

With roots in the Dominican Republic and the Republic of Ecuador, his parents, Reggie Luis Ch and Veronica Luis earned athletic scholarships to study in the United States. The ‘sporty’ extension reaches his two younger sisters also – Rachael Luis and Rylee Luis. While Rachael is doing well in basketball and volleyball, the youngest one, Rylee, is in the exploring phase. She has tried her hands on volleyball, basketball, and cheerleading.
Talking about RJ–coach Pitino sees a bright future for the youngster. And RJ proved that by winning the 2025 Big East Player of the Year award and was also a semifinalist for the illustrious 2025 Jersey Mike’s Naismith National Player of the Year with his performances. After these many accolades, fans would presume that he might have lots of lucrative deals. Well, let’s dive deep.
What are RJ Luis’ NIL deals as of 2025?
As of 2025, there are no publicly reported NIL (Name, Image, and Likeness) deals for RJ Luis Jr. Surprising, right? The guy helped St. John’s pull off an undefeated home season and secure a conference title, yet there’s no record of him cashing in—at least, not openly. However, that doesn’t necessarily mean he isn’t benefiting. Many athletes sign deals that aren’t publicly disclosed, and given Luis’ rising star power, it wouldn’t be shocking if he had a few quiet partnerships behind the scenes. What is confirmed, however, is that he is part of St. John’s broader NIL program, which boasts a reported $4 million payroll, the highest in the Big East.
Yet, coach Rick emphasizes the fact that – St. John’s isn’t the product of a high Name, Image & Likeness payroll. “First of all, I think there’s a lot of misrepresentation about NIL,” Rick mentioned after winning the Big East Title in 2025., “NIL didn’t get us this team because Zuby [Ejiofor] and RJ [Luis Jr.] are very low-paid players. That’s nonsense about NIL.”
