Rick Pitino's stolen memorabilia—just bad luck or a sign of deeper issues at St. John's?

Tragedy struck St. John’s University when the head coach Rick Pitino’s office was broken into by a pair of burglars. The two thieves are said to have robbed memorabilia including basketball, and bullhorn on Tuesday. Pitino’s office, which is located just a floor above the hardwood in Carnesecca Arena, also had bottles of alcohol, a sword, and a mask taken away among other things. And now, Pitino has finally broken his silence on the ordeal, opining that he was really upset with this.

“Really upset! Taking my memorabilia is one thing but the 1985 6L Petrus Pomerol has me livid!!!” Pitino wrote on the social media networking platform X. The bottle of wine stolen from Pitino’s office is that of 1985 6L Petrus Pomerol which costs around $99,598. Hence, Pitino, who was already heartbroken when the thieves stole the memorabilia, further sunk into disappointment when he got to know that his wine bottle was also not there.

The thieves are said to have snuck in around 6 PM on Tuesday and stolen $375 worth of goods in addition to the bottle of wine. It is reported that they ran away with the stolen goods towards the west on Union Turnpike. The police department is being assisted by school officials, and footage from the surveillance cameras is being used as evidence. As of now, not many details of the ongoing investigation are out.

However, fans breathed a sigh of relief when Pitino later came forward to clarify that he hadn’t lost the wine bottle and was joking with his admirers. “The 1985 Petrus was a joke🤣🤣I would never keep that on my desk! Saving that one in a wine cellar to open after the Johnnies go to the final four!” Pitino tweeted on X.

And now that Pitino has revealed that he will open one such bottle if the program advances to the Final Four, his fans must be waiting exactly for that.

Rick Pitino is the only ray of hope left for St. John’s

Have an interesting take?

Pitin0 was born in New York City and was recruited by the University in March 2023. The once-acclaimed program had been going through a rough patch for quite some time, and Pitino was given the onus to rebuild it. The only thing that played spoilsport to Pitino’s planning was that St. John’s didn’t have many stars, and the program was ranked so low that they had to fire the previous head coach Mike Anderson after just four years of stay.

Although Pitino didn’t perform the miracles he is famous for, such as lifting the Championship title, he nonetheless, tried his best to reform the program and led it to third place in the Big East. Plus, given Pitino’s experience, the program expects skilled players to transfer under him, as he could guide them to the March Madness.

Hopefully, the school will soon recover from the loss. And Pitino will be able to concentrate on his duties.
